I wouldn't count on Yamaha meeting our delivery dates with all the problems Japan is facing right now. :'(

Earthquake in Japan

This might add up to a delay. In fact I see a lengthy delay added on now. Yamaha Corporation headquarters and manufacturing is in Iwata, Shizuoka which is definetely in the southern portion of the country and right across the river from Hamamatsu, Japan home of Suzuki. This seems to me centered toward the North east portion of the country. I suspect the whole country will be in disarray from this for a while. Devastation seems widespread from what I have read and seen on the net. Either way this is not good news for them of course and us fools waiting on a yet to be built motorcycle.

Gosh! I sure hope that they had enough warning to keep casualties to a minimum. Our bikes will definatley suffer a lengthy delay. I would not be surprised if we see none this year. Hopefully it does not happen, but their whole logistics system is going to be upside down.

I received this overnight from my brother, who resides at the south end of the north island, Hokkaido.

It's not highly specific, but has some good information:

Dear Family and Friends,

Several people have inquired about the earthquake here so here is what we know.

1. We are OK. Hakodate, the city where we live, had a 1-2 meter tsunami, which came on land a little in the very low places, but not near where we live. However, I was informed this evening at a restaurant where we were eating that water surged near to the back of the train station near our home, which surprised me. However, in general, Hakodate is doing OK.

2. Other areas of Japan, notably the central east coast of Japan are not so lucky. There have been forecasts and reports of tsunami's of up to 10 meters (about 33 feet), resulting in a large surge of water moving inland and taking everything in its path.

3. The earthquake occurred somewhere NE of Tokyo out under the Pacific Ocean. It was reported to be about 8.8 on the Richter scale, which is BIG; and I guess part or all of it was a vertical displacement of the earth, which is the primary cause of tsunami's. We are still seeing the effects of the tsunami on our TV and it is devastating for some parts of Japan. Tonight is a nightmare for some of the people here in Japan, so our prayers are with the people whose lives have drastically changed in the blink of an eye. Some deaths have occurred already. Buildings are designed for earthquakes here so typically there is not much damage unless there are unusual circumstances or the earthquake is unusually strong.

4. Anyway, things surely are not dull around here right now, but we were extremely fortunate.

Best Regards,

Jim Ricks

Good to hear your brother is ok. I feel for the less fortunate. Thanks for the information

Thanks, and no problem. 8.8 is HUGE. A little closer to land, and Japan would have had a serious bite taken out of it. That's an awesome big earthquake. Alaska and the Yukon have been having a few little kickers lately, but nothing like this. I'll pass, thanks. R

We won't know for a few hours, but there are also tsunamis poised to hit CA and OR...las reports were 4 to 6 feet.

Much of the SF Bay is landfill, meaning not a high elevation...which could be inundated by waves of this size.

Japan has an excellent disaster response team (they need to) and are adept at recovering manufacturing capabilities, as their economy is so dependent on it. However, the human toll is still not to be taken lightly. I'm sure everyone here joins me in thinking they'd rather a delay in receiving their bike, over a further loss of life.

Damn! They just said on TV that they were looking for a ship that had 100 people on board. It's no where to be found.

This was one big, momma of an earthquake. One of the biggest in history.

I wouldn't be surprised if the cycles are already on the west coast. I always do a spring order for fall snowmobile delivery. Cut off dates are 04/15 and the sleds show build dates of May and June for September delivery. Dealer inventory for showroom sales show build dates of July.

But lets hope for the best for the people of Japan, because they will have months of clean up ahead.

The first waves have reached Oregon and Hawaii. The potential threat for the US is over except for aftershocks. I wish our Japanese friends a speedy recovery. As for the bikes, I just hope that production/delivery issues are minimised and that Yamaha is operational. In any event I can wait.

That was one big quake ???

I wish everyone over there the best, the images on TV last night were shocking. Hoping for reasonable outcome for you all and condolences for those worst affected.

Cheers
Graham

This from Yamaha USA on Facebook.

Our counterparts in Japan have told us Yamaha’s facilities have not suffered any damage from the 8.9 magnitude earthquake that hit Japan. We are grateful for this news, but cannot be entirely sure of the quake’s impact on global logistics. We are not anticipating any disruptions at this time. In the meantime, our thoughts and prayers are with the people and families who have been directly impacted.

Wow! I am amazed that they can be so persistant. "Anticipating no disruptions?" If they suffer a meltdown on one of those reactors, all bets are off.
