If you're on the way, stop by and say hi/change a tire/have a beer/juice box for the kid ::003::

That would actually be perfect ::008::

Heading to Glacier NP first and then through Calgary to Jasper and Banff.

I have a set of K60 Scouts in the trailer. I was going to pay to change them in Montana but Calgary would work. The Scouts should then be able to finish the trip.

I've stumbled on that video before!

I can't wait until my little girl is old enough/big enough to join me on some epic journeys!

Kudos to you for holding up that promise, and I'm sure you will have an epic journey to AK.

You better watch out, or you might be doing the ride that goes with the song in that video when your boy is old enough to ride his own!

Nice setup... ::026:: on the yellow.

Looks like you and your son are set for a great adventure; I'll make sure to keep an eye out for the thread to see how you guys progress.

Hoping to do this myself in a year or two from FL on my ride.

What kind of trailer and hitch setup was used? That's a nice addition for a trip like this that I never thought of... nicely played sir!

Cool story, future rider there for sure, perhaps ironbutt while he's young and foolish. Interested to see the changes you made, lots of pix please.

If my body doesn't give out, I'm thinking a pair of KLRs and the TAT when he graduates high school ::003::

PM and I'll get you my contact info. If we know when you are coming, a bunch of us can get together and help you swap your tires,

Have a great trip north with your son 'coyote! Loved your first vid...we'll be expecting another when this trip is in the bag!

SO and I are heading north this summer, timing looks to be earlier than yours. We've also got a slightly shorter distance to make the border... ;)

Was hoping we would be able to run across one another on our travels, but we will be leaving about a week and a half later. Current plans are to go to Vancouver and head up the Western route to AK. So, I think that means our changes of a get together is pretty slim. I think we'll be following you most of the time. Although we'll be riding those really fast black s10's, I think that yellow will stay in front of us. ;D

You've got yourself a good setup for the trip not to mention a great riding partner. Always wanted to do a trip like that with my son, but time marched on to fast for us to make it happen. Now I notice time is marching way to fast! :(

Enjoy the trip and may all the riding gods be with you and your son. ::26::

Thanks all! :)

Got a few updates.

About the bike. It was bought used and the previous owner had unfortunately for him, fortunately for me, low sided it. No mechanical damage but the tank was dented and scraped as well as the left side crash bars and caribou case.

The price was extremely fair so I made about a 1200 mile Iron Butt round trip in the XJ to go get her.

I fixed up the crash bars with JB weld, lots of sanding and flat black paint. Good as new! Caribou case, lots of sanding and a heat gun made them look, pretty good. You could tell if you looked close but it definitely was not worth replacing.

The tank could have been left alone but I really like yellow and this was a good excuse to go in that direction.

The bike really didn't need to much. It came with an ohlins shock, parebellum screen and full luggage.

First real change I made was a Russel Day long. I get a standing 10% discount for buying way too many seats from them and I bought a $100 gift certificate for $25 off the ADV flea market. The seat is really awesome and I can't imagine riding long distances without one.

While the seat was away I figured that I would do lots of stuff to the bike including the paint job, ecu flash, valve adjust and electrical farkles. Bad idea, bike wouldn't run when I put it all back together. Best I can figure the painter messed with the fuel pump in the tank and I spent 2-3 weeks tearing the bike apart and putting it back together thinking I f'd up the valve adjust. Long story but if want to a good read and are considering doing your own valves I recommend it. Lot's of good info that came from the site experts trying to help my dumb ass. ::008::

http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=10371.0

So the seat is pretty sweet. For those of you who asked, yes the rear does seem to be higher than stock. In the pics the front is in the low position and the back is about 7" higher than the front. Not really a substitute for a backrest but it does give some support for your butt. Maybe a crackrest would be a more accurate term.

People have also asked about the hitch. As far as I know there are still no commercially available hitches. This was made by forum member Z06. Price was fair, workmanship excellent. Trailer pulls great.

Also got the flash done by avc8130 ::008::

I moved the caribou trunk to the trailer tongue and put my old Givi on the bike.

Other add ons were the madstad bracket, extra brake lights, an old free pair of LED driving lights and a 6" Rigid combo.

All in all you would be surprised how little I have invested in the bike. :) :)

I wouldn't be surprised.
I can tell you are one of those clever and detailed fellas. You think things through. And tenacious too.

I'm really pulling for you to have that epic trip you have worked hard for. :)

::026:: more on the color, the plan, the destination and the promise kept. ::012::

I have tried very hard in my fatherhood to NOT be like the "cats in the cradle with a silver spoon, little boy blue and the man in the moon" and not blink and miss it. A child can never get their childhood back once it is gone...don't miss one minute of that.

My only child is getting married on Sept 21, 2014 and will miss not seeing her every single day.
Good for you ::008::
