It seems there are a lot of folks that want to get together and do a ride. So my thought is, if you’re going to do it….do it big! I propose a regional ride, open to one and all. All makes and models, so if you have a friend with brand X, bring them along. It seems to me the way to do this would be to come up with a ride of epic proportions so it will be worth traveling to get here for those coming from out of town. Make it a one day ride so you won’t need to rearrange your life to make it happen. Keep the difficulty level within reach of a large group so we can have a good turnout.

With all that said, here’s what I’ve got in mind. I’ve done a particular ride several times that is a ton of fun. You can find a fair amount of info on the internet by searching for “Mormon Well Road Las Vegas”. One website in particular, www.birdandhike.com is the best to get an idea of what is involved. The whole ride would be a little over a hundred miles with just less than fifty miles on dirt. Good dirt to pavement ratio. The road is part of the Desert National Wildlife Range at Corn Creek, just north of Las Vegas, NV. Conditions will vary from hard pack road with light gravel, to sandy stretches as we cross washes that will make us slow down, to sections that make you ask, “is there really a road here?” The sections that will be the least fun are few and don’t last too long. I think of it as part of the adventure (Key word: Epic).

The initial stretch is graded, well maintained gravel. From there the road starts to climb up into the Sheep Range Mountains. It’s a well-traveled road that reminds me of some of the passes we rode in Colorado this last year…..minus the trees, altitude, etc… You’ll see the occasional loose, larger rocks that you will want to go around. We’ll just pick our line and press through. No hurry, no drama. We will pass through a Yucca Tree forest, if you can call it that. Then we we’ll go through a place called, “Peek-a-boo Canyon.” The canyon is very pretty, although small, but then it opens up a bit and the ride will pick up pace. By this point we will have gained a fair amount of altitude so we will be seeing more green stuff. Before you know it, we will be in an ancient pine tree forest. There is a primitive, but well maintained campground complete with a pit toilet (I just like saying that….pit toilet). I thought it would be cool to have my wife follow the group in my Hummer as a backup vehicle, as well as a food hauler. This will also keep her off the back of my bike so I can have more fun…..If anyone repeats this to her I will deny ever having said it. I’m calling “Bro Code” on this one.
After lunch, it’s all downhill, literally. We will have a little less than half way more to go. Sawmill Road Wash will be the last of the scenic stuff. From there it’s down the long grade. Occasionally crossing a wash, climbing a hill, etc…. More of the fun stuff.

Meet up times, dates, places are all wide open at this point. Right now it’s cold up there and snow is a possibility so planning for a spring or summer time frame makes sense.

Let me know what you think.

Mormon Wells is a nice road, I'm in once it warms up a bit. I was up there 2-3 weeks ago on my XR650R. I would say it would not really be passable now on the Tenere, too much ice. Long stretches of glare ice, with no easy way around. The trucks go over the snow, pack it down. The sun comes out and melts it a bit, then it refreezes. Maybe in a few weeks it will be better.

I might be interested. I only had the FJR when I lived in Vegas, so didn't get to explore as much as I would have liked. I'd be looking at April, I could potentially tie it into a trip to NAB, which is the 7th through the 10th.

I agree with not trying it now. Way too cold, plus like Talonboy said, snow/ice would suck. I'll do some more research but I'm thinking April might be a little early. I was thinking May or even June. I would expect it to be about twenty degrees cooler at the summit.

I hope to drive the route in my truck tomorrow if time permits. If not tomorrow, I'll do it ASAP. They have been making improvements near Sawmill Rd Wash. They are putting in a culvert to keep the road from washing out. I'm thinking they are done with it but I want to see what it looks like first hand.

I'll get some feed back from the rangers as to the weather conditions in early to mid April. It can be windy at that time of year but all we can do is make plans. I'll let everyone know what I find.

Looking forward to this ride and others in the area. Waiting for a non-icy date.

Mormon Well Rd is not open all the way through. I drove up there Saturday morning. It is closed right after the campground.

That's not the end of that route as a possible location. If they get funding to fix the road it would be open again. Also, it's still a great ride up to the campground and back. That just makes it a little long.

As far as weather, I'm told that normal weather conditions would make for a nice ride by the end of March, so April is certainly an option.

And of course there are many other areas to ride. Boulder City, Spring Mountains, Death Valley.

Jon, Please count me in, as long as I don't have a Girl's Softball thing going and normally we don't play on the weekends except possibly the High School Regional Tourney on May 17 and the State Tournament May 24th. I take a batch of kids to Mexico to build houses Friday night, 14 April (the start of CCSD Spring Break) but will be back Wed the 16th. Any other weekend is a GO for Luke right now. You know, not being married, I should be a lot more free than you, but . . . . Thanks for setting this thing up. I'll help with the food, drinks and sandwiches for the trip. I have contacts in the Jersey Mike's business! See you before then, I hope, for a local ride. Luke

Luke, sounds good. After speaking with the good folks at the Desert national refuge, I'm leaning more towards April. AVGeek is hinting at the first or second week of April. Odds are, the route will be clear and the weather should be good. Kind of like Goldilocks, not too hot, not too cold, just right. Gina is good with bringing up the rear in my truck with supplies so now we just need to get a head count and solidify the date.

Since you offered, I'll anoint you, Food and Beverage Director. I was thinking it could be a hamburgers and hot dogs kind of a thing, but I defer to your authority.

We have time to iron out the details but it's never too early to start planning. Anybody who has some interest please chime in.

Ok, I'm setting the date in stone. Well, maybe not in stone, but a solid suggestion. April 6.

We can meet for breakfast, ride to the top of the trail. Enjoy a restful lunch. Then back track to the highway. From there, we can takeover a local watering hole that wouldn't be offended by dusty travelers.

It should be a full day. It's a great ride and will really be cool meeting those of you who haven't joined us before.

Sugarhighrider, I'm leaning towards the first or second weekend. Tomatocity are you open to the second weekend? Eagle, put a hold on both weekends until we get this figured out. Luke and dan, I've already committed you guys.

I'm good with that. April 12th, First human in space (1961). April 13th, Palm Sunday. April 14th, Passover begins.

Well then, with all history aside, let's do it the 13th of April 2014.

Mark your calendars everyone.

Oooops! I had to edit the date to Sunday the 13th. My wife will drive my truck to bring lunch and she works Saturdays.

NOOOOOOooooooo. I goofed Jon! I leave Friday the 11th to build houses in Mexico with the church. I have a whole crowd going that weekend, including Eagle and wife (I think). That's the weekend before Easter and the first Friday of CCSD Spring Break. The Mexico trip is locked in stone, so I guess I can't make the FIRST big ride we are setting up in the history of Las Vegas S-10s . . . . Now the saddest day of my LIFE!!!!! Have a great time. . . it will probably be a . . . . (I was thinking the "sour grapes" story) . . . never-mind :-( :'( :'( :'( :'(

I know I said Friday night the 14th (like an idiot!) when it's been April 11th FOREVER. . . . . sometime I just don't think! A sad and dejected Cool Hand is going to bed . . . . . Night Night

Jon, my apologies, I am indeed already booked for April 12th and 13th. If anyone is available for April the 5th, I could do a ride. Yikes, the gray matter does not work so well sometimes. ;D

Good will and all. I would rather see more riders. My dates are flexible.
