April 6th....which I have confirmed is a Sunday (thanks Don in Lodi)... is the day of the ride. We will be riding Mormon Well Rd in the Sheep Range Mountains just north of Las Vegas, NV in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge at Corn Creek. Google it...... If you see a link to www.birdandhike.com check it out. It's a great site with a lot of valuable info.

I propose we meet at the gas station at the corner of N Durango and Farm Road. We will meet at 9:00 AM. Kick stands up as soon as everyone is accounted for. If you have a last minute change of plans please call or text me. I'll list my number below.
I show that as still a Mobil station, (8490 FARM RD, LAS VEGAS, NV 89131), but with a USA station almost next door, ( 8410 Farm Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89131)
We will ride out to the ranger station and visitor center. Sign in if you want to...it helps with their funding.

From there we can stop at a local watering hole for drinks. This will also give us a chance to coordinate our alibis.
Good Idea.™
At this point you will have fulfilled your Sunday obligation....you may go in peace.
I get Sunday's off with the new job, so should be able to make this. Hopefully in not too beat up shape to begin with. I'm hoping to spoon on a set of Kenda Big Blocks for this ride. I had a set waiting, but a bad hole in the rear K60 ended up requiring me to mount the only other tire in the garage, so I'll need to order another BB, and another K60, dammit. And probably a rear Anakee 3. (send money!!)

I will consider filling the fuel cell if anyone thinks they may need more gas than they normally carry for the ride. Sounds like that won't be an issue. I'll also have the normal crap I carry in the panniers, tools, duct tape, zip ties, air pump, first aid, gallon of water, condoms, etc. So if you want wild burro sex, please ask to borrow a condom! And we don't want to watch! Well, I don't want to watch. Seen in it the Philippines, but that's another story. ???

Sounds great so far. Thanks for all the ground work Joneil. ::012::

Ok. I just did a test run. The road is great. The climb up the slope is my least favorite part. Heavy gravel but as long as you stay in the tire tracks it's fine. Not fun, but fine.

After that it's a blast. Just before you get to the camp ground there are some deep ruts that need to be accounted for. As well as a couple of wash outs that you will want to slow down for. No big deal there either.

It's an easy ride over all. Today, my beautiful wife was on the back. If I can do this ride 2up with my limited skills, anybody can do it.

With stops and lunch I'm thinking about 5 hours overall. Perfect day ride.

You can cross out the maybe part next to my name...

And I know exactly where that gas station is...I used to live further north up Durango!

Will do Carson. The burros will be safe on this trip, but those Big Horn Sheep sure are cute.

Seriously, if anyone can assume photographic responsibilities that would be awesome. I'll get whoever does it a merit badge.

AVGeek, I'll update your status. I always knew you were gonna make it.

I stopped at a place on Durango called Shuck's Oyster Bar. Lots of parking for us. Reasonable prices for food and drink. They have picnic tables they can put together. Should be able to accommodate 20 people no problem. They will also have plenty of bar stools at the bar. Nice place. Lots of sports on TV.

I'll make sure my camera is charged up. I still need to pick up another batch of helmet mounts (mine isn't a go-pro, but it uses the same mounting hardware)...

Cheryl and I plan a 2-up pre-run ride this Saturday (March 22), lunch at the top and peek into the new visitor center.

Pre-run accomplished! It was perfect weather. I took some video but my video editing skills are so sub-par that I might not get anything posted.

It's 28 miles from the visitors' center to the summit. I would characterize the road as "rough surface". It's not technically hard, just lots of rock - loose and embedded. The upper section has some rutted 2-track but there is a nicely flattened center line for much of it from the low clearance vehicles. We rode it 2-up with no drama in about 1.5 hours with a 10-minute break. The summit elevation is about 6700 feet, so it should be pleasantly cool there. Facilities are some spread out picnic tables, partial shade, pit toilet, and no running water.

Cheryl is game to ride with me again, so not sure that we need a support vehicle unless non-riders, kids, or dogs are joining. Of course my idea of a box lunch actually fits in a box ::017::

Looking forward you seeing you all in fortnight ::012::

Very cool Neil. I found the same things. I think I will still have Gina drive the truck for food and beverages. Some of these out of town guys are known as "Chow Hounds!"

Just as a reminder: this all goes down April 6th.

If any of you can't get enough and want to do some riding on Saturday, I could lead one of the popular local loops.
- Mount Charleston loop (pavement) + Mack Canyon (a couple miles of mountainous dirt road). This reaches the Las Vegas area alpine region up to about 8400 feet elevation. It's located due West of Sunday's ride area. Approx. 3-4 hours.

Hey Boondockers, If you start a little later in the day (noonish . . .) I can maybe go with you. I have softball practice 8-10:30. Maybe we could meet at a PT's Pub or BWWs on this (Northwest) side of town and leave from there after some good grits. . . Let me know as it develops...

Jon, I plan on getting chips and Jersey Mike's subs to split once we get to the top with a cooler of water and gator aide. Let's discuss adult beverages on the Mt Top over the phone. . . I planned on getting a variety of Turkey, Roast Beef and Ham with a tray of fixin's (Let and tomo and pick and onions) and a bag of mustard and mayo . . . so our friends can fix their own. I need to know if I should pick them up Sat night or Sunday Morning.

BTW, one of my softball players dad has a great old time rock and roll band (Headz and Tailz) that is playing at Viola's on Rancho South of Craig on the West side of the street) from 8 until 2ish. A lot of bikers show up there on occasion. The have good barfood, the beverages are cheap, and the music is right up our alley. I help them run sound and promise you there is something for everybody and room to hold us (I'll get there early and save a few tables) This would be a nice way to meet the early comers over a draft. Just food for thought. . .

Did I miss what time we are thinking of pulling out? Please remind this ol' Marine as I'm getting forgetful. Also need a head count for how much food and beverage to bring. It's coming together! I like . . . LUKE

maybe good timing.
haven't checked forum for awhile.
might be riding back through Joshua tree (I'm from Fresno) and could make a side trip pretty easily.
is there a sign up post and a definite place, time schedule, cost, etc.?
i looked through thread ( Pg. 4) and saw the gas station location off of 95 (Durango exit) and meet time of 9 am? is that the most recent update?
if so, I can most likely make it. : ) josh

I've been neglectful. Let's see if I can get everything updated.

Luke, call me at 702/499/7343. My cell. We got stuff to discuss.

Neil, I can't make it but I'm intrigued. I would love to know exactly where the trail goes etc....

Dehmlow, come one come all. No $ required. This is just an excuse to get a bunch if us together. I'll add you to the list. Everything concerning time and place is a go. Call me if you need more info.
