Dealer called wanting my business... thoughts on my offer?

I visited two Yamaha dealers last week, both long term players in the Denver market. The first is close by the house and the second is about twenty miles away. Right next door to my Harley dealer.

The salesman from the second dealer called this morning, they have a 'loaded S10', and with all the dealer accessories, their farkles, dealer prep, transport, etc... they asked well over 17K.

I told the salesman nicely that I want to accessorize the bike myself... just want a base model and offered him as my bottom line, non-negotiable price, this time of the year, snow on the streets, I'm in no rush to buy, etc... 13.5K (plus my sales and local taxes).

What are your thoughts re: the offered price?

I left him profit on the table and told him that my offer is contingent on my final confirmation.

For the record, I haven't yet ridden the model of bike due to their no demos in the area and snow and ice on the streets.

I'm open and in no rush... but if I can get a good price... WTF! ;)

don't know anything about the american market but I think you put in a strong guaranteed offer. Unless the salesperson has other leads then I suspect you may be getting a return call in the next week or so.

ps you won't regret it

That is the same price my dealer here in Tennessee is offering there`s for. Two trains of thought here,$900.00 under but still plenty profit left for the dealer, and it`s also the slowest time of the year for street bikes. If they don`t take this offer I would be looking elsewhere.Teneres are not plentiful but they are out there at good prices. Good luck ::022:: ::022::

So you pay a sales tax in Colorado huh. We pay what is called a street use tax of 3% here in NC then title and tag. I paid $11,999 at D & H Cycle in Cullman, AL so you paying $1500 more seems high to me. I've got about $14,000 total in the bike with farkles etc. Of course hitch hiking all the way to Alabama was the hard part ::025::.

Blue Tenere at Blackmans Cycle, Emmaus, PA 610-965-9865 for $12,900 plus sales tax and tags.

$13,500 is too much.

Just got a call from a third dealer's business manager, called them about two weeks ago and had not visited them.

He's motivated to sell, end of year and his out the door price (plus sales tax) is $13,488.00

Again, I did not call him either.

My experience in Denver is that the prices out here on vehicles are almost always higher than the smaller towns and cities elsewhere.

I think 13.5K is a fair offer. They have a black one up at Ft Collins Motorsports (at least the last time I was there). But it has several of the OEM add-ons on it.

Check Cycle Trader for nation wide dealer pricing. Looks like there are some deals although I don't know about your area. Bought mine a D&H Cycle Cullman, Ala. Great deal and nicest people you will ever buy a motorcycle form. Bought an FJR from them in 07, went back for the ST this past November.

Remember that MSRP went up $600 since the PDP days and is now $14,500. Dealer invoice also went up almost that much since those pre order models.

I bought mine from Grand Prix which sounds like dealer 2 for you. They were great to deal with honestly. I got mine for $14,500 out the door. That included the $1000 in taxes, and their $700 in fees which would make the bike in the high $12,XXX range or $13,000 which in my opinion was very good. It was a blue one with no accessories.

You could probably beat that price by a few hundred elsewhere, but by the time you get it home it will be about the same price. Having a local dealer that you have a good relationship with can be worth quite a lot down the road. You made him a fair offer I hope it works out for both of you.

Sounds like a fair price for a post PDP model in your area. Feed the local guys so you'll continue to have support in your area.

I've been doing a little shopping and if you can get one OTD for $13,500 I would say that is a really good buy. Of course different regions will effect the OTD price but anywhere from $13K-$14K OTD is pretty good from what I have seen. Here in AZ as a rule of thumb add 10% to your sale price for tax, title, license, dealer fees etc... Our tax is a little high in my opinion as it runs 7%-9% depending on the city then add that 3% for the rest of the BS. One of my local dealers told me during a casual conversation that he thought he could do $13K + TTL and such which I figured at 10% more so it would be just under $14500 I would imagine. I agree with one of the other posts that having a good relationship with your local dealer is also worth a little so I personally wouldn't sweat $200 bones more to buy local, that said if I could save $1000 buy traveling a little that I would do.........

Oh well I am still just admiring from afar anyway at this point since I have not been able to justify the purchase yet so my DRZ400SM will have to suffice for a little longer. Maybe we will see how much the Tax Santa gives me back and then I might pull the trigger. I'm kinda dying with only having a 400 but I will say it is a hoot throwing it around.

I bought mine last year (but delivered this August) at G Force in Lakewood (maybe dealer #1). I paid less, but 13.5 sounds like a good price around here given the new pricing and more predictable delivery date. I also talked to Grand Prix (maybe dealer #2) and really like dealing with them, but they weren't any more competitive at the time.

Good luck!

I paid almost the exact same price at Grand Prix.

I too think it is a fair offer considering the price increase that Fred reminded us of.

Climb14er, you might give Ft Collins Motorsports (ask for Ryan in sales) and just see what they will do.
Good luck,
Rod

For those in the southern/central IL, eastern MO areas, perhaps a good place to put in a plug for my local dealer, Niehaus Cycles in Litchfield, IL. They presently have two Raven and two Blue Super Teneres in stock and one of the blues is a demo that you can ride, weather permitting. Right now they have an off season sale going on and I am sure will match that $13.5 price plus TTL for in state buyers, no TTL for out of state. Click on their logo on the home page for contact info.

Full disclosure: I have been a customer since I bought my first Yamaha from them in 1973, a TX500. They have treated me very well since then and after I retired from my real job at the local electricity factory in 2003 I have helped them out part time from time to time. This summer I worked full time in sales when the sudden death of one of their salesman left them short handed. I really enjoyed that, especially having the pleasure of selling 5 of the PDP S10's and getting to know the new owners. Good people.

Not the most ideal of circumstances (dead salesman and all) but what an interesting situation given that you have had such a long standing customer relationship with the dealership, then to be on the 'other side' getting to see things from a different vantage point. It's not easy being in business, satisfy all the various demands of a business, balance wants, needs and the books... and trying to make ends meet... and often the shop gets to be caught between varying degrees of conflicts and pressures. Plus you got to know like minded buyers ::008::
