Specter, it's time to go out and flog it. Quit babying it, you need to seat the rings and you'll never do it babying it.

I'm near 20,000 miles and have never had to add oil since new. This includes my 8300 mile, 20 day trip through 28 states plus DC, and kicking it all off with a trip from San Diego to Jacksonville in 44 hours and 58 minutes with temps up to 109 degrees consistently during the San Diego to San Antonio leg.

Checked my oil today and had to add 1/2 a quart of oil to get the oil level back to the center of the sight glass. My bikes only has 3100 miles on it and oil was changed at 500. It was properly broke in and driven responsibly. I was actually pretty surprised to see it needed oil. I can't even remember the last time I had a bike that burned oil. bummer.
With the semi dry sump system we have, there is a large variation from reading to reading. If your oil level was truly 1/2 quart low, and on an AVERAGE was that far below the center of the glass, your oil level low light would have been on. Make sure that light is coming on with the key on prior to engine start.

Had a quick scan of the thread and I don't think anyone has mentioned this, apologise if I 've repeated.

At 11000 miles my S10 started to use oil. The oil light was on 2 weeks after service. I actually thought the garage had cheated me on oil! Top ups disappeared every two weeks, but no smoke was visible at roadside checks. I did start smelling burnt oil at junctions.

Inspection of the engine showed the oil leak at the clutch cover, which has been reported elsewhere on the forum. The oil wets the underside of the engine and then blows onto the exhaust collector and burns away. There is very little evidence of the leak unless you start wiping around casing joint. Yamaha replaced the dowels and clutch case cover on warranty. I'm 5000 miles down the line and no more leaks.

48 000 km and never had to top it up. I use the ten minute routine given in the manual every few thousand just to be sure but never an issue.

Well same time again as last year... had to add 1/2 quart of oil again. Maybe it is related to sitting up over the summer... odd. This time the low oil light came on. It is not from babying it. It gets its fair share of WOT.
