We were just in the Black Hills about a week ago riding trails.
We tried to ride a bunch of the ATV 4 digit [trail permit required] trails.
I would say that a lot of them are Tenere trails "BUT" you could be ridding a nice trail through the forest with no problem at all and come up on a rocky difficult section, If that happens and you don't like what you see just turn around and try another trail. There are a lot of trails out there and you could never cover them all so don't take unnecessary risk and find another trail.
I'll put up some pictures to show what the trails look like.

This would be 4 digit atv trails.












Hope this helps give you confidence to get out there off the beaten path and see some of our great country.

Here is a close up of the free trail maps of the Black Hills.
Notice the 4 digit trails are Special Designation 62 inches or less. These are the ATV type trails.

Notice the top trail says Roads Open to Highway Legal only, For some odd reason we found that these trails can be just like the ATV trails the only difference is your vehicle must be licensed.

The second one down says Roads open to all Vehicles is the one that is just a normal gravel road. It appeared to me that they had these two reversed in the descriptions.

Yes permit required for the 4 digit trails.

I couldn't find a description off hand for the roads and trails that require a permit but I think it is required on more than just the 4 digit trails.

Very easy, At any atv rental and they are everywhere.

This won't apply to us at the rally , but to ride your ATV on the roads out there you need to purchase a temporary out of state license plate if your state doesn't license ATVs/ They can only be purchased at a court house and it is only $2.00 a day with a 5 day minimum. But I stopped at three court houses along I90 on the way to the BHs [so Michelle could start riding early the next morning] and not one of them would help me because they didn't know how to do it. [Or actually couldn't care less] I had to get it in Custer City.

I think you can get a 7 day pass for $20 or a year pass for $25

Here is what Gunner came up with for the art work for the T-shirts. What does every body think of the design and if you are interested in purchasing a T-shirt what type do you prefer, a standard t-shirt, or dry fit, short sleeve or long sleeve? We are 10 weeks out so its time to get these into production if anyone is interested.

Just announced, the USA border will remain closed until July 21. Even it does open on the 22nd i wouldn’t get to the rally before it ends so I’m out.
Bummer but par for the course in Covid times.

I’m going to make the trip along with my son-in-law. He’s on a S10 too. We are both looking forward to it! If all goes as planned we’ll be in cabin 14.

If it’s not too late I’ll put in a order for a couple of XL T shirts.
