I'm jealous. Wish I had the time to do that. Been wanting to do the Beartooth and Chief Joseph for years.
Could you point me in the right direction to ride both of these? I appreciate it !

thanks

The way I've been thinking about doing it is to overnight, most likely in Cody, WY. Head out early next morning going north on Hwy 120. About 16 miles or so north of Cody, turn west on 296, the Chief Joseph Highway (aka Crandall Road). You'll go up and over Dead Indian Hill and by the Dead Indian Summit Overlook, through several switchbacks, then northwesterly down and into Clark's Fork of the Yellowstone River Valley. And then about 46 miles after you turned off of Hwy 120, you'll "T" into US Hwy 212, the Beartooth Highway.

From the intersection of the Chief Joseph Hwy and Beartooth Hwy (296 and 212), you can turn right (east) and it's 50 miles to Red Lodge, MT, through amazing switchbacks, up and over Beartooth Pass, back down through more amazing switchbacks, on what is often called the most beautiful drive in the US, and into Red Lodge.

Or, at the intersection of the Chief Joseph Hwy and Beartooth Hwy, you can take a left and meander sorta northwesterly for about 18 miles to the northeast entrance to Yellowstone National Park, and there turn around and do the whole Beartooth to Red Lodge. Eat lunch at Red Lodge and turn around and do the Beartooth and Chief Joseph back to Cody.

Or you could overnight in Red Lodge and do it backwards from my above description. I don't know which would be better from a sun-angle point of view. But doing the Beartooth and Chief Joseph, both ways, is do-able in a day, starting and finishing either in Cody, WY or Red Lodge, MT or even Belfry, MT. If anybody knows a better way of doing this, sound off.

If you plan to camp it, there is a Forest Service campground just south of Red Lodge at about 7000'. Great campground and easy to loop Beartooth and Chief Joseph and the road from Belfry to Red Lodge.

Limber Pine Campground

A little more convenient than Cody.

On your way back south, allow time to ride Wind River Canyon both ways.

Looking forward to meeting you and some of the other "Old Guard" out there.

Old Hill City road #323

So I guess I need some help please......

I am tinkering with my GARMIN SW making tracks and what not, I could not find Old Hill City road #323. A little help? DO you have some good tracks that you have ran you want to share?

Hill city road is a paved road that runs from the town of Hill City to the town of Keystone. It parallels the 1880 train tracks.

I second Limber Pine Campground.
It's an excellent Campground. Really clean!
The site Hosts are really nice also.
I've stayed there twice now, on two different motorcycle trips.

There are sites available in Limber Pine and two other campgrounds in the immediate vicinity, for the nights of the 19th and 20th. I'm thinking seriously of doing the Chief Joseph and Beartooth Highways on the 20th, then heading to Custer on the 21st. Anybody else interested?

Well things change,
1- My wife can't make this rally. There is still a chance that I wouldn't be able to attend.
2-I'll be on a different bike than planned. [the Blue 2012 Beast,,, The real trail bike]
3-This means I'll be looking for some riders wanting to spend one day ridding real trails, [Mark] I know of some tough ones over near Nemo.
4-I have a cabin reserved for the nights of 22, 23, 24. that I really don't need. I prefer my tent. If any couple out there that are coming and didn't get a cabin that needs one, get ahold of me. It's cabin 28. It's the nicest cabin in the campground, well maybe they are all the same.

Hope to see everyone
Steve

Steve, sorry to hear that. I can break away for one day and do some solo riding. Sounds like a good plan.

I might try to join you both, but wouldn't want to hold you back. It would be a good learning experience. I've ridden some rougher stuff in AZ, but I have also turned around if I feel I'm over my head.

We should be rolling in to Custer on the 22nd. We have a cabin reserved and can put up additional tents for $10. I can get off my leash for one day of riding one up. The other days will be two up and paved or easy gravel.

I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone.
