I store the bike in my unheated garage, plugged into a battery tender. This worked fine for 15 years of owning Gold Wings. April this year, after last winter’s hibernation for my 2018 S10, the bike wouldn’t start. I had it towed to my local shop, and they installed the upgraded Yuasa YTZ14S. Bike ran like a charm all year.

It’s now been hibernating this winter only about three weeks. Started it once two weeks ago. However, now it won’t start. Engine turns over fine. But it won’t catch. My process is turn on the key, wait 20-30 seconds, and crank it. No throttle. The battery lives on a battery tender, so it's fully charged. Valve clearances have been checked.

I've cycled the key on and off several times before trying to start (in case it's losing fuel pressure). I can hear the fuel pump turning on. I've tried opening the throttle to almost fully open, and to fully open, while cranking. All to no avail,

A bike mechanic friend of mine, who’s knowledgeable, but not a Yamaha guy, suggests it may have a temp sensor issue. It might not be enriching it enough. Can anybody suggest what my issue might be? Could it be a temp sensor issue?
TIA.

Common problem and there's a ton of info in the forums about it. Sadly, the search function in the forum sucks so what we all do is use Google.....a majority of Google results will point you right back to yamahasupertenere.com forum results.

It was fairly common with the Gen 1 models ('12 & '13) but rare with the '14 and up. But yeah, it sounds like the "hard start" issue. How long did you run it when you started it last? If only for a moment (less than 30 seconds) the hard start is most likely your issue. In the future, it is better NOT to run the engine at all unless you run it for at least half an hour or more. It does not hurt an engine at all to be dormant for the winter.

My rule is..I don’t start it if I’m not going to ride it. Even if that ride is only to the mailbox and back. I’ve only have had one hard start and that happened when I violated my rule.
I agree totally but how long would your wife keep her car if every time she happened to start it up and move it then the next time it wouldn't start.
Don't get me wrong, I'm one of the biggest Yamaha Super Tenere fans, but this problem should have been corrected by Yamaha back in 2012.

sadly Yamaha gets away with pretending the problem doesn’t even exist

Others make way more power with the same restrictions. I’ve had a couple of hard starts alone n remote places. It seriously shook my confidence n my S10. Never had another bike that did this. It’s been a couple of years since my last one but I never leave without my jumper pack.

I've never had a hard start with my 2012, but the noise on this forum has me carrying a jumper pack. I don't know if it's warranted or not!
