Anyone try a 110/90 front instead of the stock 110/80 size?

I gotta ask.........(not really disagreeing either)
Junk because they don't do the job of a tire?
Or junk because they don't last long?

They are round, rubber and they roll, so that makes them a tire.

The S10 is a big heavy MC and I would be concerned about the tire holding up for 100 miles.

Tires are not where I try to save money. JMO

If it doesn't hold up for 100 miles, then Junk would be fair, at least on a Tenere.

So what is this event? :)
And all you need out of the tire is 100 miles of off road?

Delightful. Intriguing. I like the rules.
Snake it is the Desert 100 weekend. I want to do one of their dual sport events they have on Saturday, the day before the race. Their is also an ADV race of 50 miles, but I don't think even at a turtle pace I would want to put the Tenere through that. So DS ride will be it for me.

Good luck on that. And be sure to post your take on everything involved.
As for tires, I hope you get the biggest knurliest 100 mile tires you can find. :)

I am as serious as a F'n bad heart-attack!!!! I will be riding maybe 100 miles off road on this tire in a DS ride in eastern Washington this April. I will be transporting the bike by a Penske truck there, then home along with a weekend of tools, coolers, and rain protection. I will have a tube in there as well. So, it sounds like you have preference for the Scorpian Rally then!!! What has been your experience using the Shinko as mentioned above? Are you laughing at this because it is Shinko?

This is what I want to hear back about.

Jeff
I have thought about doing this myself, but I have to ride 350 miles before I can find decent off road,so I have procrastinated. Can't speak for the knobbies, but I really like their 705's on my Tenere for the street. I think a K-60 on the rear and that knobby on the front would be a great off road combo. I know it's not tubeless, but it would be interesting to see if it can hold air without a tube. Are you going to try that first?

I wouldn't do that. Believe it or not, tires are marked "tube type" and "tubeless" for a reason.

Snakebitten, another bad thing is that if that tube type tire spins on the rim just a little and rips the valve stem out, partys over.

LOL, this isn't for the Daytona 200. I'm well aware tube type and tubeless tire beads are different.

SO, I am observing the general consensis is a TT tire isn't a good idea on a TL rim. OH, on to plan B. Scorpian Rally!!!

I just ordered my second set of E-07s yesterday. They currently have both sizes in the Dakar. Why let $27 stop you from having these awesome tires!

I'm late to this party, so just want to add a couple of Shinko bad experiences. Other than price, have not seen or had a good experience.

DCStrom had one on his Tenere, tore it at the base of the tread, and lost pressure.

My son had one on his DL1000. It got a bit more than a third of the miles that the OEM Brickstones did.

I had one on the rear of a Strom and watched it go from tread to slick over about 200 miles. I kept stopping to see why the rear was hydroplaning so bad, thinking I had tread just yesterday, and alarmed by how fast it was going away. We were trying to get somewhere to buy a new tire on this thrilling night ride in the rain that I never want to repeat.

All of that said, IMHO a low power DIRTbike in sharp rocks like a strip mine that would tear up tires would be appropriate for using a Shinko because you will need to replace it quickly, regardless of brand..

At this point when I ride with others and see a Shinko STREET tire (or one of those offbrand colored ones) it makes me look at the owner and wonder why.

Thank you !!! Like I said in another post, I sell MC tires for a living and I sell the Shinko's because some riders want a CHEAP tire. I do make sure to always tell them just exactly what they are buying.

Trust me when I say I'm convinced! I'll try almost anything. I admit that. But I won't ignore the data. :)

Conversely, would a 100/90/19 tire work? If it is stated as a rear tire, will it still work? I am doing some thinking and don't want to spend $125 on a Pirelli Scorpian Rally, where I can just get a SHinko 523 tire for $60 to be used on a weekend. What you all think?

They do have that size in the E-07 non dakar or the correct size in a dakar version. He showed me both and pointed out both spec the same in the Mitas book (which turns out to be a misprint) but looking at the 100/90 right next to a 110/80 dakar version............the 100 actually looks wider. Mind you this is unmounted and who knows if that dakar was at the bottom of a stack at some point, or maybe the dakars look skinnier unmounted due to the sidewall or maybe just an optical illusion. I took they 100, then debated whether to take it back several times but I think I will mount it up and measure.......only way to tell for sure what the numbers are. In theory the 100/90 is only 2mm taller (they don't give that spec online) and only 8mm narrower. If it sucks then I'll pull them - didn't cost all that much.
