when i first started riding i was a VERY budget minded rider. i bought an hjc helmet the same day i bought my 2007 FZ6. later when i bought my Arai i used that for a few months before going back and trying on the hjc. i will never buy a budget helmet again. ever.

if you only try them on at the dealership or wherever you are trying them on you simply are not getting the difference. it takes time. think of it like trying on jeans at the store. they are not broken in and the quality may not become apparent for some time. will they do the job at hand? of course, but there is a difference between old navy jeans and Levi's.

Arai and Shoei are not only based on their names. the quality truly is better. most of it is as was mentioned- comfort and fit. the shell material is going to be about the same all around throughout the helmets unless you are going carbon fiber in the higher end ones. but the foam and padding material is VERY different in the lower cost helmets. also there are little things that just have more thought put into them in the more expensive helmets (such as Arai has no molded areas on their visors because they feel that this may lead to distortions when looks through the visor).

what i would recommend is buy a last gen model that is on sale if you are really into saving money. i know that the budget helmets are good enough for many, but i cannot recommend getting an Arai, Shoei, or an AGV enough. skip over getting yet another bike mod for a little while and get something that will truly make a difference in feel on the bike.

This is how I acquired my current Shoei RF1000. Bike Bandit was closing them out, and between that and my AMA discount, the helmet cost me about $280 shipped, as I recall.

I am on a tight budget but the very last place I am going to cut corners is on my helmet. I would buy less farkles or even a less expensive motorcycle before I would ride with a cheap helmet. As has been mentioned there are deals out there on quality helmets. I got 25% off an Arai XD4 at the International Motorcycle Show a couple of weeks ago. Was it still three times more than a Bilt? Yes it is. Is my head worth it? Absolutely!! If I’m going to save money buying something plastic it will be the Yamaha bags instead of Jesse’s. It doesn’t do you any good to save money if you’re not around to spend it.

My RF-1000 sits in the bag on the shelf. Oh its nice helmet but I am wearing My new Bilt Adventure. I like the new design for its fit and function. In a couple years, it will get tossed and be replaced, just like all the others. The quality of the "cheap helmets" has gotten better.

Plastic or fiberglass, after one impact, they are toast anyways.
I am thinking DOT requirements and ratings are good, I'm going with it.
I think graphite would be better but too spendy.

I picked up a N718 DS helmet from Nikko Moto ...... so far I like it.

The only thing I did not like about the Bilt helment was the lack of a finger tab to lower the face shield.

Yeah , I agree. That could be a problem especially if your wearing gloves . I didn't realize that , thanks for the tip.

Actually a plastic helmet is good until it cracks. A fiberglass helmet is designed to absorb the energy and is indeed toast after one impact. Go to K-mart or Walmart and pick up their $19.95 special piece of fantastic plastic with a casting seam right down the middle of it and spin it around and check out the DOT sticker. DOT means nothing. Snell is the only thing that matters in the US anyway.

While you were trying to be supportive of Snell, there is a very incorrect implication in those first sentences. A plastic shell may have more ability to rebound, but the same increase in tolerating a localized deformation means that the internal foam at the point of impact can lose thickness from both the external deformation, as well as the crush of head displacement internally. The plastic shell may not crack or be penetrated, but the sharper the item is that you impact, the MORE likely that a plastic shell will compromise the very foam that we depend on.

The following 2 graphics show what your head is trying to do inside a helmet:

This is the second graphic, showing head acceleration vs impact force:
(From here: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0734743X08003308 and similar data here: http://www.smf.org/docs/articles/hics ) is

The really cheap helmets tend to use a stiffer foam material, so your brain may not get the more gradual deceleration you want and also doesn't get the lower rotational forces that you will get when wearing helmets using higher quality materials. This plot shows the relative properties of two different foams. While most of you will not get the engineering, just understand that different foams may give the same helmet MASSIVELY different abilities to slow your head and not simply transmit a sharp load.

In addition to the plastic vs fiberglass debate, there are two helmet ironies that few people are aware of:
First, our small wives, girl friends, and kids are at greater risk. Smaller heads get relatively less protection, because the foam is generally not tailored to helmet size and head mass for each size of helmet. As a double irony, those people are frequently thought of as only occasional users, so many people will not buy them a more expensive helmet that has what would be a more compliant foam, even for us fat-heads.
Data: http://www.smf.org/docs/articles/hic/Becker_Snell_Conf_M2000_vs_EC-BYG.pdf

I do agree with you, in that Snell gives us great standards and protection. The contrasting irony is that some of the expensive helmets also don't give us as much protection as we think they do while IN TYPICAL STREET accidents. While better than the ultra-cheapies, some of the helmets we ooooh and aaaah over are designed for the sharper impact load transients that would be associated with high speed racing tumbles. Snell recognized this when going to the M2010 standard currently in use, so the M2010 makes a lot more sense than some top-end earlier helmets or those helmets meeting only EC or DOT regulations.

Never understood why anyone would skimp on a helmet. A good, proper fitting, helmet is a top priority to me AND my pillion.
::026:: It's an Arai DX3 for me. As soon as that helmet hits the 5 year mark, it gets retired for an XD4.
I learned a long time ago backpacking on the AT to never...never scrimp on equipment.

You are gonna like the XD4. I went up from an XD to an XD4 and it was an amazing difference!!!

I, too, change out helmets every 5 years....if I haven't worn them out sooner than that. Fortunately, I ride a lot of different styles and have as many helmets but it doesn't take too long to wear out a helmet from use when you do 20-40,000 miles a year. Even though I wear a head sock.

Great thread.. This is a link to the Sharp helmet testing and results. http://sharp.direct.gov.uk/node/33 I've worn Scorpion and Bell helmets and both have good ratings. The nice thing is they are both priced in the mid range, with the exception of the carbon.

Not all helmets are created equal, but the price is not the best way to judge one. Some of the mid and lower priced helmets have the same features of the higher priced ones. The one thing that all helmets should do, is fit your head.
