I bought the bike at 56,000mi. mostly cross country travels. one day i was riding , It started to hesitate backfire, just barley run at all.
very difficult to get started, eventually got it home keeping high rpms. OK added water treatment for fuel.
took apart.
Findings : conciderable amount of oil in air box, plugs were original and warn out carboned up, Valves were out of spec.
Shimmed valves , changed plugs, cleaned air box, New filters, new oil, shaft oil., rear brake fluid,
flushed. Fuel tank drained , refilled with fresh 93 corn fuel
Bike seemed ok for a couple days. Then I have noticed every time I wash my bike ,
the next couple times I ride it , I seem to get stuttering and hesitation.
Odd thing , usually it occurs at less than half tank of fuel .
I have metered the coils , all 4 ohm out correctly,
All coils have rust showing.
The ECU shows many and multiple codes. I do not know how to remove delete or translate the codes I see on the dash .
My thought is to erase them , start over then take it to a dealer I guess and suffer the reamage for A Diagnosis.
I am at a loss, seems like electrical to me or fuel pressure issue. i can tune any carb bike, but other than my VFR this is my first fuel injected
bike Ive ever had to really work on . Im beginning to dislike this machine . . can anyone give me some advice ? please ?
Also as it warms up it sounds out an odd rythmic clunk in the engine. sounds as if its in the clutch or timing area.
this developed before I shimmed the valves.
I also did not notice which elec plugs on teh coils went where 2 have white tape, 2 do not. white ones fell to the right coil on each cylinder.
Assuming i may have those wrong , is there a difference ? like rotary engine has leading and trailing plugs ??

Why not post a list of the codes?

I am suspicious of those coil sticks, given the corrosion you mention - sometimes they can read OK cold but still be fooling us. Perhaps you can post your readings; the Values Yamaha give: -

Primary - between the 2 pins at the top of the coil - 1.19 to 1.61 Ohms

Secondary - between the LH pin & the spark plug connection - 8.50 to 11.50 K Ohms

BTW, you will need a decent quality tester to get anywhere near an accurate resistance reading, say a Fluke or similar.

Otherwise, you mention that the bikes runs better on a full tank, or words to that effect, suggesting that this could this be a failing fuel pump or blocked tea bag filter. You may have seen this link ........

Thank you sir, I have ohmed the coils and they are proper. I have Fluke Meter ( comm Tech) . I will try to figure out how to get a gage on the fuel line,
as well as find the proper range of pressure. thanks for the thread Link .

These coils are notorious for their inability to keep water out of the plug wells. Misfire and corrosion are the usual result. An O-ring and dielectric grease have been used successfully. Would need to hear the rhythmic noise, might be timing chain slap, the the '15 has the updated tensioner, shouldn't be an issue.

Mine had the same symptoms. It needed a fuel pump. Mechanic said mine had 20psi. I figured it was electrical from the backfiring.
