I've been running Amsoil 20-50 in the S 10 since the first oil change.

Using the Mobil 1 stubby filter that I can remove and install without dropping my Altrider bash plate.

Is the Amsoil filter short like the Mobil-1?

Should I be running the 10-40 instead of 20-50?

My oil has arrived as has my filler tube, thanks for the fast shipping. Looks like I may hit my first oil change by this weekend. I will be interested to see what the OEM fill looks like and how the clutch feels afterwards.
Glad you got everything okay - that filler tube makes the rear drive much easier - I use the flex end on each bottle and I don't have to worry about messing with a funnel. Then just ad the small tip when you switch to the gear lube. You don't have to worry at all about the little bit of residue from the motorcycle oil - that is actually also rated as a gear lube so having a few 10ths of an ounce won't hurt anything.

I like to drain the old stuff and then flush some new stuff in before putting the drain plug back in. I wait until I see the color change and then I know it is completely flushed.

On a side note, with a hydraulic clutch - you get less of the sensation of how well the oil is affecting the clutch - so you may not notice a big difference. I didn't notice as much with the S10 as I have on other bikes without a hydraulic clutch. My clutch is really starting to feel smooth now at about 4,000 miles though - so I think you will notice it getting better and better.

Good luck - it was a pleasure working with you!

Thanks!

You can use the AMSOIL EA15K12 Automobile filter and it works fine and is shorter than the Motorcycle filter that AMSOIL specs for most Yamaha products. The bypass valve pressure also is correct for the S10 engine. I'm not sure if it is shorter than the OEM Yamaha filter, but I am pretty confident it isn't longer. I could measure it for you if you want an exact size.

I would recommend using the 10w-40. I don't think you would ever have any issues with the 50 weight oil; however, since the 40 weight is the specified viscosity from Yamaha for the S10 - I think you're better off sticking with that. (Also, the lower the weight of the oil - the cheaper it is... not that there would be a big difference, but no reason to spend money if you don't have to....)

We could likely save you some money also - send me a PM if you're interested in looking at what we can offer you.

Thanks and good luck!

15k miles?

Coastie that filter is actually an automobile filter that happens to be the same size as the OEM S10 filter. It also has the same bypass valve pressure and flow ratings so it is an excellent option for use on the S10.

AMSOIL does not offer this exact filter as a "Motorcycle Filter" but as I said it is a perfect match. The labeling (including the mileage rating) is for automobile use and while because of the synthetic media filtration material, this filter will have a higher capacity than an OEM filter - I would still recommend sticking to the Yamaha Manual's suggested filter change intervals even when using this filter. When I sold that filter to Ydtrack I made sure he was aware through PM that it was labeled for Automobile applications and not to follow the 15,000 mile change interval when using this filter on the S10.

This filter will catch smaller particles more consistently and have a greater total capacity for holding these particles than other filters, but because of the wide variety of riding conditions the S10 could be used in - the safe bet is just stay with the Yamaha intervals regardless of what filter is used. These filters aren't very expensive either, so it is just cheap maintenance to change the filter regularly imho...

Ok, thanks! I thought the 15k was a little strange.

I use AMSOIL with the EAO filters on all my cars/trucks and change the oil every 12 months / 12,000 miles. The S10 will get the standard oil changes.

AMSOIL Filters

I am using the Mobil-1 108 Oil filter.
I think it's the same as the stock filter. Should be 2.5 inches tall.

Can be removed and installed wihout removing the AltRider bash plate.

Can you cross check the Amsoil part number agains the Mobil-1 number?

The M1-108 Mobil-1 Oil filter is a direct match to the AMSOIL EA15K12 or the WIX 51365. I looked it up in my Cross-Reference Guide.

I hope that helps!

For this oil change I switched from Yamalube to Amsoil 10w-40. I have used full synthetic (Motul) in my other machines without noticing any performance change so I didn't expect to notice any difference but I must say that the S10 seems to run quieter and shift smoother with the Amsoil synthetic. I'll continue to use Amsoil in the future. BTW, this is a great price too. I'll be placing an order soon.
