I LOVE shaft drive. It's an awesome luxury.
But that's how I categorize it; a luxury.

If I limit myself to only ride bikes with that luxury, I'm denying myself access to 90% (or more) of the 2-wheeled transport options.
I just can't take that stand.

Chain or Shaft, I just want Yamaha to build the best middleweight ADV bike in the world.
They already build the best BIG ADV bike in the world. But not just because it's shaft drive. But because it's the best shaft drive.

One thing I hope they don't do is let price point ruin the mission. It was stated earlier that BMW owns this segment. And they do that with a chain drive middleweight that cost more than a Super Tenere! kinda proves it doesn't have to be cheap. It just has to be great.

Even so, the press will likely pass it over. Lol

If I did not need a two person bike, I would in a heartbeat.

Let's face it, the metrics are dropping the ball big time by not putting out a real midsized adventure bike. The public has begged for years and nothing.

I wouldn't necessarily agree… I think the UJM (Universal Japanese Bike, as it was called in the late 80s) is making a comeback and has been over the years. I remember in the 80s and 90s if it wasn't a sportbike it wasn't in the pages of any Cycle World, Motorcyclist, etc… Now you see/read about all kinds of non-sportbikes in their pages And sales of "un-faired" motorcycles are up and lots of manufacturers who produced predominantly sportbikes are expanding and are producing them like MV Agusta, Aprilia, BMW, Ducati, etc… And look at the options the major Japanese companies are now making.

I also think motorcycles like ADV bikes have an image "stereotype" as covered in other threads. A lot of people see ADV bikes as an older riders motorcycle; A touring bike with a better riding position, too heavy to actually take off-road...

Sorry back on topic :)

Some good points were brought up. I would want it to be more off-road capable. Something that was built with 50/50 use in mind. So the bigger wheels make sense to me. Chain would also be okay with me. 30+ years of riding, the S10 is my first shaft driven bike. I do like the low maintenance. But in those 30+ years of having chain driven bikes I've never had a problem with a chain.

It looks great. I doubt would sell in USA though. Here we have Harleys, or other Harley looking bikes, or sport bikes. That is it for the most part. I don’t get it. I wouldn't buy another chain drive anything, so it wouldn't interest me to the point of ever getting one in place of the super tenere. If it was shaft drive it could be a nice bike. Chains are not an option any longer for me. Did that exclusively for nearly 40yrs, but no more of that for me anyway. Bike looks nice though, and hope it actually is built.

If they bring it to America, I sure hope it's the 900 triple. I've ridden the FZ-07 and it's a real pooch. I had paperboys on balloon tired bicycles passing me on that thing. Slow as a stone.

umm...you should twist the throttle a bit harder...
I think it's a great motor, excellent fuelling and pulls nicely.
Having sold my 9 and bought a 7, I think it's a winner.

stop picking at this guys...we covered this a while ago, and I would be pleased as punch if they brought a xt-07 when I just bought a FZ-07 ::010::
At any rate, talk around the fire is that they will bring a FJ-07 variant before they do a XT. I hope I'm wrong.
I wrote this some time ago: https://thetenerist.wordpress.com/2014/03/25/build-it-yamaha-and-we-will-buy-it-a-start-of-discussion-for-a-smaller-tenere/

I haven't ridden an FZ-07 yet but I will in the next month or so. Everybody I've talked to that has say is a really great bike. Based on that I certainly would be interested in a Tenere utitilizing that engine. I've been interested in the 660 Tenere (that we'll never get) for quite some time. If this concept 07 materializes, I'm in.

I don't know if I would now. When I first got the ST, I had an FJR (and my quad, which I still have), and I was really looking for a street legal WR450, or the XT660. I even added my voice to the chorus of those asking Yamaha for the XT...and then we got the ST. It's now the only bike in my garage, and I don't ride it enough as it is. So lighter weight would be an advantage, but the overall experience of owning the 1200 has spoiled me for all other bikes...

great motor. Feels like a twin. I'm breaking in mine, but so far the 1st impressions are very positive.
I think it's better than the 9.
It had shite suspension (not that the 7 is better, yet it is) and the fuel mapping sucked as well. MOtor was a monster.

So yaw will never by a small bike for the rest of your life?

Ever? They ain't likely to put a shaft on a DRZ, or a DR, or a WR, or an XR, or a ..........

I love my S10. I love that wicked shaft drive. But sometimes you gotta have fun out in the yard. ::26::
