Had it done at Action Yamaha in Metuchen, NJ. Great bunch of guys there.
I was pleasantly surprised that dealers like that are still around.

Cyl 1:
Intake 0.13/0.13
Exhaust 0.25/0.25

Cyl 2:
Intake 0.14/0.14
Exhaust 0.25/0.25

Brief notes on personal treatment of this bike:
Always warm up to 140-150 before pulling away regardless of season
Take it easy for the first 10-15 minutes of riding to allow for everything to heat up and expand gradually
Rarely gun it from the first, but do ride fast once its rolling

Glad to hear that you found a great dealer. Regarding your valves...did they really needed to be adjusted?

I've always wondered about the need for valve adjustments depending on how hard the engine is treated. I don't wait until I hit those temps to pull away but I do start the bike and ride gently until the bike is up to operating temperature. And I spend little or no time at the top of the rpm range. Will be interesting to monitor my valves to see how they track.

BTW, what did your valve check cost at your dealer?

There is a reason to have the valves adjusted the first time you have them checked.

1st check: $X amount to check the valves

2nd check: $X amount to check valves + $X amount to adjust the valves

If you had the valves adjusted to the maximum the first time you would have avoided one of the "$X amount to check valves".

The dealership will not tell you this until it is too late. I nicely demanded they adjust the valves to the maximum. Should be awhile before I need to have the valves adjusted again.

Interesting... I like the way you're thinking here!

The valves on my bike were in spec at 26 and 52K miles. First adjustment was needed at ~ 78K, second adjustment at 100K miles, third adjustment was just done at 125K miles.

Best,

Chris

I don't see how you really gained anything unless you plan on skipping a "$X amount to check valves" on the ASSUMPTION that they are "ok" because you adjusted to "max" the last time.

It's a Yamaha. 26k mile interval is by far the furthest of any motorcycle. Do the maintenance as it is required and get a happy, long life.

Chris - do you know what your clearances were at 72,000? Just had mine checked at 75,000, and as last time, a couple of exhaust were out of spec - one tight by .03 mm, the other by .02mm. So, about one thou. Both times, experienced techs said "don't worry about it". So I'm not!

Trevor,

Sorry no. That is the only adjustment where I didn't get any information from the tech. :(

Tech's normally don't give spec's when doing valve check. I had to request the spec's and explained why. The second valve check / adjustment I requested spec's and requested they adjust all valves to the maximum stated clearance. They tried to charge me for the shims so I asked them for the shims that were removed. They removed the charge for the shims. The next valve check I am going to request I get to watch the tech make the measurements.

Can't believe riders don't challenge charges for things like this.

Also caught them over charging new customers for the additional YES years on the 2013 Deal.
