    Fork oil and seal change

You are right on the oil weight but wrong on oil volume....which does not soften or stiffen the ride. Less oil results in more air volume in the forks and decreases the amount of air spring in the forks that helps to prevent bottomming at the end of the forks compression stroke. Too much oil...

    Equivalent fork oils?

I have found (as have several of my friends) that Honda SS-7 is a very good substitute for Yamaha 01. It costs about $6.00 a pint at your local Honda dealer.

    The coming economy and us

Thank you for the most interesting analysis but it seems to assume that our Republican controlled Congress will go along with all of Trump's proposal programs and this seems a stretch considering how many (especially Paul Ryan) have been against his spending proposals for years and think that a...

    Changing Tires Cost

Thanks for the insight Mark, you were my inspiration in 2006 when you posted on the FJR Forum how to DIY tire changes. I made a $300 investment for a Harbor Freight changer (which I modified to avoid scratching rims), a Mojolever (best investment I ever made), a Marc Parnes balancer, and 3 long...

    A Question for the Heavyweights.

I know who you are referring to and his comments are shared by quite a few happy FJR ES owners but they all seem to be overlooking the considerable improvements provided by the inverted forks (the first FJR to have inverted forks) and giving all the credit for the improved ride and handling to...

    Experimenting with the ES

Your posts are difficult to understand because you appear to be changing damping settings and calling it Preload. There are only 4 preload positions (which can only be changed when the bike is stopped) but as many as 21 damping settings (of which 3 can be changed when the bike is moving).

    Report on "Progressive" fork kit

You shouldn't be giving spring and damping advice until you learn how they actually work and interact with each other.

    valve adjust problem (Not really)

Re: valve adjust problem This doesn't appear to be the problem but it is something I have wondered about on reassembly if the cams and cam chain have been removed.....and I think the purpose of the cam position sensor is to synchronize the ignition with the crankshaft so you will never be...

    valve adjust problem (Not really)

Re: valve adjust problem I think you are mixing mm and inches. The standard sizes are in increments of .05mm or .002 inches. Half sizes are in increments of .0025mm or .001 inches.......I think ::008:: The shim kits like Hotcams come in standard sizes, I buy half sizes from Jake Wilson.com.

    Reality or myth?

Purdy? You must be a different zzzzip than the one I met in Castlegar :)), maybe our paths will cross again in Silver City this year. ::003::

    NoNoise Ear Plugs

Thanks for the clarification....I really didn't expect there was a simple way for one to administer a self hearing test. I am also on the preachy side when it comes to earplugs. I buy them by the box and offer them to anyone that is not using them and almost everyone who uses them reports...

    NoNoise Ear Plugs

Mark, sorry to learn of your hearing loss but thank you for your very informative post. As I stated earlier, I was first exposed to how easy it is to have hearing loss when I was in the Navy but I think they mis-stated how that hearing loss is going to impact your life. I certainly do not...

    Tenere vs FJRh

While the FJR is much faster than the S10 on the open highway, that difference is not apparent unless the speeds are over 90mph. If you can't easily pass in 4th gear (at highway speeds) then you probably should not be making the pass....and I can't remember the last time I had to use 4th to...

    NoNoise Ear Plugs

I just did a quick internet search and found numerous voice frequency ranges but also noted that the voice transmission frequencies seem to be in the 4kHz to 8kHz range so maybe that is what the Navy was referring to since its pretty important for pilots to be able to communicate with the...

    NoNoise Ear Plugs

I don't know what relevance my age has to do to the factual accuracy of my post or the effectiveness of ear plugs in preventing hearing damage but I am 67 and have ridden 435K miles since I started using ear plugs. I'm sure my hearing is not as good as it was 45 years ago but I am not remotely...

    NoNoise Ear Plugs

My first exposure to earplugs was when I was in Navy Flight School in the late 60s and we were taught that hearing damage would result in a hearing loss that would start between 4000-8000 Hz which is the normal range of the human voice (I am just a messenger here and repeating what I remember)...

Measuring fork oil height - with or without spring guide?

You now have more air in the forks than you should and will probably loose the progressive effect on the spring rate that compressed air gives you at the end of the compression stroke. If you are not bottoming over big bumps or under heavy braking and are otherwise satisfied with the fork's...

    Valve service suggestions

Why wait until the cams are out, couldn't you line up the crankshaft mark and then mark the inside of the cams to an easy to see reference point?

    Stoltec's Project FZ-09

Good read....thanks for posting. I don't plan to buy a FZ-09 but am very interested in what magic Nick will work with the suspension.

    Rumor of new 2014 model....

Very true, I rode the 2013 Multi Strata with the Skyhook semi active suspension and while it was the best electronic suspension I have ridden to date, it was not as good as the suspension I already have on 4 different bikes in my garage.....just more expensive and probably less reliable.
