I rode a modified KTM 1290 and was not impressed, I believe the modifications were probably messed up by the installer, probably would have ran better without the modifications.
Ive ridden this bike with only a muffler... It was a total BEAST, if you wanted it to be... I think the KTM has the best off-road geometry period in my book. You give up some on the highway and 'road' use but it feels excellent. I also REALLY like the clutch feel and throttle spring, both of those are very nice.
ALL of these ADV bikes, from ALL the manufactures have pro's and con's.... It's ultimately really up to the rider for what they are doing, where they want to go, and possibly how far away these trips might be (how do they want to use the bike). All these bikes are NOT for every person. I kinda get sick and tired of the Ford VS Chevy idealism of what people should or should not buy because of weight, power, size or color................................. who cares.... we all enjoy the same thing, riding motorcycles !
(For most folks on the internet this is a slight joke, sometimes it gets deeper and goes to far on some forums)
Maybe its just me, if someone camped next to me with a Russian made bike, Harley, 300HP Hayabusa, 125cc Chinese bike, we would all have a blast and learn about each others bikes and have a great time. Why all the distain for something that doesn't fit your needs or ideas, but is great for someone else's wants / needs ? Don't get it?
I might just have to buy 100cc Amazon ADV bike as my new bike and then go ride every BDR in the US ! ................. LOLOLOLOLO
Have a great time out there, our time is limited !
