Mine snapped after about a year with infrequent use on one bike. I attribute the failure partly to my Yamaha heated grips being a larger diameter than regular grips, hence putting a greater continuous stress on the plastic. Moreover, it's being heated and subjected to sun exposure.markjenn said:I've have the plastic version for three years, used on six or seven different bikes, installed/removed tens of times, and easily done 35K miles - not the slightest problem. And even it it was to break tomorrow (which I'm not expecting), I've easily gotten $20 of use out of it.
To install or remove the plastic one, it has to be pried far open -- a nervous experience, especially if it's to be shared between bikes. The aluminum one opens easily, and its friction is easily optimized for different grips using the thumbwheel.
The finely machined aluminum one is $32. The way I look at it, the nerve-wracking molded plastic one is $52 (initially $20, plus $32 once it breaks ).
