My white S10 was first registered in the UK in August 2011.

How can I find out if my bike is a '11 or '12 model?

Look at the title. My 2012 Tenere was purchased 7/30/2011 and registered 8/2/2011.

I don't know if the UK follows the USA VIN numbering sequence or not, but if so here is the VIN decoding...check the 10th digit

Since there has been several discussions on the VIN number decoding, I thought I would post what I have found from Yamaha's own documentation to the NHTSA.

Our VIN's are as follows: JYADP03x?CAxxxxxx,

So starting with the first letter:

Digit Value Meaning

1-3 JYA Manufacturer: Japan/Yamaha

4 D Type: Dual Purpose

5 P Displacement: 1001cc & up

6&7 03 Model (Super Tenere)

8 E Type of Emissions 'E' is a 49 state version,
or Y 'Y' is a California model

9 varies Checksum

10 C Model Year (2012)

11 A Mfg plant (Iwata, Shizouka Japan)

12-17 The sequence number - order of build, typically starts at 000001

Working backwards, that would suggest that "B" would be 2011, and "A" would be 2010...
and 0-9 would be 2000-2009.
Order just about any part from a dealership these days and the first thing they ask for is the last eight digits. So much info packed into those silly numbers and letters.
And it used to be the ninth month for the next year's models. Now, I've seen a car made in March with the next years vin# and underhood info. Crazy.

Many thanks for all your replies.

Although the VIN number decode ( any thanks stevpsd) appears to be slightly different in the UK compared to the USA, it seemed to indicate that my bike is 2012 spec.

On further investigations I found a UK motorcycle paint company which list 'Competition White' as a 2012 colour.

Using both pieces of above information, I think I now have the answer to my question.

Thanks again

Mike
