Well, not really - But they can idle along nice and slow when you need them to ;)

The long story short:

I lost my GoProHD (just fitted a new LCD back onto it) a few weeks ago in the forest where I ride all the time.
I had it clamped to the back rack of the bike facing rearwards and when we stopped about 12kms out I noticed it missing. :'(
The clamp was still there but the thumb wheel had come undone and spat the camera off onto the trail (into the bush's) somewhere.
I immediately marked a waypoint on the GPS and decided we would back track at the end of the day as I did not want to ruin our ride by idling all the way back home looking for it so early in the day.

The end of the day come along so I navigated back to the previously marked waypoint and followed the bread-crumb trail back home at maybe 20>30kph looking side to side hoping that it would just be found in the middle of the trail somewhere.
We were obviously not lucky that day with no sign of the missing camera so we call it quits and enjoyed a bear to drown the sorrows.

We headed out last Saturday for a really good ride out in the same area again with this lonely lost soul of a camera playing on my mind, so I decided to go out for another recon mission on Sunday morning.
More of an excuse for another ride I guess as I was not very hopeful of spotting the camera after so long.
Anyway, I generally dont do much idling around on this (or other) bike and never realised how easy it is to ride this bike trials style standing on the pegs and just letting the engine do it's thing in first gear.
The area we ride is a mix of gravel/sand/dirt and consists of many rocky and/or sandy hill climbs. The tracks are jeep trails to overgrown single/goat trails and there are a lot of rain ruts and fist to football sized rocks dotted here there and everywhere.
I rode the entire track to the marked waypoint (took about one hour) in first gear at engine idle and really had a great time, and, was super surprised that I never once had to feather the clutch or use the throttle.
The engine idled comfortably at 1000>1050rpm at around 13kph (8mph) and at times, through boggy terrain or steep uphills, dropped down to lows of 800rpm at around 10>11kph (6.5mph).
There were times when the side bush was quite thick and I braked to slow down to a crawl to have a closer inspection and I am sure that the engine seemed to fire in time with the second hand on my watch, still idling, against braking load, and still with no feathering of the clutch or addition of throttle 8)

Very cool experience...
Maybe I should slow down more often and just let the Super Tenere take me for a ride.

Greg.

So much for the short story.... Sorry bout that.

Thanks Greg,

That's exactly what I love hearing. I read a lot of reports about hoe the S10 is geared to high in first. But with the kinda of low end grunt your describing it really doesn't need the lower gearing. Thanks again for the report and all you do for this community.

I was talking with a dealer in Omaha about the supa10
I was telling him I had onion order. He asked why not a GS?
I told him the final drives scare the crap outta me.
I said he needed.to get out more, that the supa10 has the best abs
even for use in dirt, sand and downhill.
He thought that was a flat lie..that BMW created abs.
I told him yammy perfected it.
He was so pissed. I told him he needed to read more

He was trying to sell me an RT, new one, at the time of the argument.
What a tool....
Glad to know that the 10 can idle along.

Good on ya for getting this rise report to is Greg.
Thank you.

Our monthly meeting is at the Beemer/kawa dealership. They tried to get me to demo the K1600, LOL.

Happy that Yamaha engineered the crawl factor in to the bike. That is the one thing I miss on the new high strung 4 stroke dirt bikes. I could idle up some nasty stuff on my old TT350 but it takes some serious clutch work or wide open thrashing to do the same on the WR.

Greg sorry to hear about your camera. Nice write up. I really don’t know why BMW still has a dry clutch. YOU Smell something burning. I know for the BMW motorcops they just use throttle and brake and lean for slow speed maneuvers. Apposed to us HD guys: Clutch, Brake, Throttle. Maybe the S10 will have a police package some day. I can only dream ;D

Yep ... the big Tenere is a great allrounder. I've ridden it off road at the elegant pace of a trials bike. I tell ya this is a superb bike. 8)

The Yamaha can go slow.....it can go fast.....and let me add, it prolly just goes! More than can be said for my BMW's! Oh, I forgot to mention, I just got off the phone with BMWNA and, yep, you guessed it, they bought back a second bike from me in less than a year as of today!!! First, they bought back my '09 K1300GT and now they are buying back my '09 F800GS. Well, I guess I don't have to worry about making room in the garage, do I????? 8)

It's gonna be a nice birthday this year!!! August birthday and August delivery!!!

Can you give us some background on why BMW took those little darlings off your hands?

And hey - Congrats to all us August birthday boys! Will be a good one this year...

Actually I'm hoping to have mine by the end of July - going to the BMWMOA rally in PA then, mainly cos it's a good place to scope out some farkles. Would be nice to show up on the S10 >:D

Going to the BMW Rallye in July?? Hell, that sounds like a good reason for Yamaha to personally get you that bike for the event. EXCELLENT PR AND MARKETING TACTIC ????? Boy, I am sure there would even be some regional sales manager who would chuckle at an opportunity to rub it in like that. I know i sure as heck would try!!!!
Make a sign next to your tent "I bought this bike with the money BMW gave me in exchange for my broken F800GS!!!!! Now I enjoy riding once again"

I'll be at the rally as well, damn it's only 3 hours from me. Hope to have the Tenere, but it's ok if not.

I don't want to dilute this thread too much with my tales of woe nor do I want it to be a bash BMW slant but suffice it to say that the GT's demise was a defective clutch that they could not repair no matter what they did and the GS was on its way to a fourth gas tank. There was a very long list of other issues above and beyond these but those were the nemesis issues that promulgated the final decision from BMW to buy them back. The GT had well over 90 days total in the shop time after 13,000 plus miles on it and the GS had over 90 days total in shop time in almost 12,000 miles as well. At one time, I had figured that the bike went to the shop for a warranty or recall issue once every 667 miles!

After having owned a total of 8 BMWs I can openly state that I love 'em....when they work. I will never buy another first year BMW model EVER again. I will most likely own another some time down the road based on my first statement.
