I know there has been a lot of discussion on aftermarket accessory purchases. Is anyone planning on buying the Yamaha accessories? I have decided that will be the direction that I take. I like the look of the OEM bags and I am not too concerned with their size. I am not too concerned with fiddly locks either. Can't be any worse than a set of Jesse bags. I like Givi products and may buy their crash guards which seem small and blend well with the bike. The Yamaha parts are not available as of today. I have been in contact with Tony at Yamaha supercenter In longview, tx. He is offering good prices. Anyway I was just curious if I was the only OEM buyer.

roy, i am going to support the Yamaha Heated grips (Thanks Sweden), the top case, the headlight guard (thanks Canada or Europe). Other than that, I may later go with the fog light kit (thanks Europe), and later the Yamaha Bags

I'm going to continue to monitor comings/goings, but probably get the Yamaha Adv package (side cases, shield, tank bag, higher screen, deflectors). I don't want heavy-duty bags; I want something that is relatively light, not terribly big, as narrow as possible, and that remove without leaving huge brackets.

I may go Yamaha on the skid plate too. Probably "run bare" on side guards - the stock Yamaha bumpers actually do a pretty decent job in minor tip overs. If the paint gets a scratch or two, I'm going to think of it as patina.

The theme here is to try and keep the bike light. I think you can armor up a bike to the point where the armor causes crashes as much as it protects from them.

Sounds as if we think a like when it comes to bags and stuff hanging off the bike ;) In the past I have bought large metal luggage, top cases and huge crash bars only to figure out the bike was severely changed by all this junk hanging off it. Lighter is better especially when the thing weighs in at 575# stock no parts on it. I will be looking for stuff to take off not add on. ;D

Hey Vince, Just a thought. If you're trying to keep farkle cost down, I went with the Givi rack and a pair of E21 cases. Total cost $380. That is for everything. If I decide in the future that I need bigger cases, givi offers the Trekkers and the bigger E cases which all fit the same racks. All are nice cases and much lower cost than OEM. The OEM cases do look good, though, so I can't argue with that option.

+1

One of the main reasons the GS's created the market for the bolt-on "swingset" hanging off of 'em is those very expensive cylinder heads being in the crash zone. The S Ten seems much better packaged for this type of bike and to me it isn't just automatic that one must recreate the whole BMW style protection cage. I'd be quick to add I don't think the S Ten is impervious to damage but I'm not gonna lard it up with even more weight until the need for it is proven.

I am mostly worried about a left side tip over/crash wiping out the radiator andending a day (or long trip) early. The rest is just for fun because even mass produced things need to be personalized

I doubt a simple tipover on the left would cause any radiator damage.

Based on my experience with street bikes (e.g., VFR's, RC51s, etc.) side-mounted radiators seem to suffer less damage during most crashes than front-mounted ones where impacts tend to be concentrated on the corners which "tweaks" the side tanks away from the tubing and causes leaks. I'd rather drop a motorcycle radiator flat against the ground than have it take a hit at the corner. And you've go a 50-50 chance there will be no impact to the radiator at all with a side-mount.

The weakness of side-mount radiators is in very rocky terrain or in heavy tree debris where you might fall on something that would cause a puncture impact. But that's probably way outside the operating envelope of the bike for most riders. And some of these impacts wouldn't be stopped by a guard regardless.

Bike armor is a tradeoff. In general, I think you mostly buy protection for paint and plastic, not hard parts. In big crashes with a lots of energy, all bets are off - I've seen sliders and guards do just as much harm as good.

Hey Paul that is a huge savings over stock would you have pics of the bags and rack you could share or point me to a link. It's not too late to change my mind b/c nothing has been ordered yet.

You know, I love the altrider engine bars, but for me, I think they're overkill. I'm waiting to see the Givi bars at 1/2 the cost. For the type of riding I'll be doing, they should be more than adequate to protect the Radiator Side Case.

I see it the same way. The Givi bars will be all I ever need if that. I never had bars on my Vstrom 1000 and did fine. I did have bars on my Vstrom 650 but that incorporated a skid plate as well. I won't be off road testing the S10 that much if any. A gravel road or two or three and that is it. I will gamble with that and a Givi bar protection.

I was going to go with the OEM side bags...and was thinking the ADVRider bars and SW-MOTECH skid plate...and that's it.

However, thoughts expressed here have made me reconsider the bars..I like the ADV design, and hadn't thought about weight. I don't particulalry like the OEM bars, they don;t look substantial enough. I may end up going with the SW-MOTECH Bars too, depending on upper fairing protection.

I purchased the adventure touring accessory package which includes the cases from my Yamaha dealer at the time that I put down the deposit. I like how the cases mount and the looks of them. They will do all that I need.

I noticed those "packages" advertised down in southern north America. As far as I know, there is nothing like that available up here in the frozen north. But then, we get to pay more for the bike ... so there. AND, we have been buying 5 dollar a gallon gasoline for a long time.

I hate to rub it in but there you go. R
