Just wondering, does Yamaha have a master mechanic "program"? It would be nice if Yamaha factory trained their mechanics and there was a database one could search to find a local one. Sorry if this is already somewhere and I couldn't find it.

I'm due for the 24.000 mile check up. I may run it over to Jaxon and let him handle it (that's 200+ miles from home, though)

Take it to Jaxon!
That would be better than regretting what could happen .
I wouldn't let anyone do this job unless I was totally confident they knew what they were doing.

The fact that he takes time to call one back and actually spend time on the phone with them means a lot to me. I think he'll get the job.

Yamaha does have a master technician program. Go to the Yamaha web site, use the dealer locator, select your dealer of choice .... and it will list the certifications at that dealership.

I stopped by the local shop for an estimate for the major service and the "certified Tech" never seen a S10 before. I got the estimate, said thank you, and moved on.

I'll echo the recommendation of the others here... "SEE JAXON", it's an excuse to go for a ride and we know he's seen a few S10's. ::001::

Wish Jaxon was here in UK. I've been quoted £800 for a major service on mine. Im confident they'd do a great job but I simply cant afford that much.

That's trade in time then.......... It's what I plan to do, when it reaches 20k miles, she's gone.

I hear ya. Traded mine at 27K miles after getting a quote and discovering that my ST would be the 1st to be serviced.
I'm able to do all the service on my current Adventure Tourer and I'm a very low skilled wrench turner. ::008::

Jaxon cares, and rides an S10. He's just good people, and it doesn't get better than that. Take it to him, let him sort you, (and bonus, he gets to feed his family too). We can't support the good vendors enough. ::008::

Yes, but still, £800 ($1200) for the 24k service??? That's just nuts!!
Your Cell phone bill per year is probably higher than a valve check possible adjust you only have to do once every few years.

My rule, set aside 5 dollars a day = 1825 dollars per year.

You'd probably lose waaaaay more than $1200.00 by trading in.
Exactly, smart money is on the bike you already have blinged out to suit you.

I get what you are saying. And my cell phone runs me about $80 per year, I hate talking to people on the phone and have no use for data service ::008::

Different priorities for different folks. ::008::

While it may only have required a "valve check" I would have had the updated CTC installed, as many here have recommended. That would raise the price of the service and increase the the risk of having the job being botched by the noob dealer tech.

It was time for me to trade while the bike still has some value and the dealer was willing to take it on trade. In another year and an additional 13-15K miles the value would have been much less and it's likely the dealer would not take it on trade.

This is exactly my opinion and reason, spending close to 15% of the value of the bike is not value for money in my book, and the cost to change will only go up after another year or so.

They do, and you can seach specifically for them. Yamaha calls them Pro Dealers, those that have 5 Star Certified Yamaha trained technicians.
http://www.yamaha-motor.com/corporate/dealers/locator.aspx?ls=corporate The basic link requries you to select a type of dealership first, then allows you to refine your search by checking either Pro Yamaha Dealers or Try a Bike. Click the box for Pro Yamaha dealers and make sure you zip code is entered in the first field and you're off.

I got the zip codes for Shreveport, LA and picked 71130 at random. I got 13 dealers from 34 miles away to 241 miles away. This is the first result I got for that search:
ROAD TRACK & TRAIL YAMAHA
600 W PEAK BLVD
MUSKOGEE, OK 74401-8266 240.91 mi.
Pro Yamaha Motorsports Dealer
Phone: 918-682-5288
Fax: 918-682-5554

Web: http://www.roadtrackandtrailcycles.com
Email: rtandt621@hotmail.com

Here is the link for the whole list: http://www.yamaha-motor.com/corporate/dealers/locator.aspx?ls=corporate#Motorcycles|71130, LA|y|

Note that there are bronze, silver and gold levels of certification and they only show one, regardless of how many techs they have that have met the YTA certification level. I used to go to a shop that hade 5 gold level certified moto techs. Awesome dealership. I rode across town and had to take 5 busses to get back home, then again to go pick the bike up, but it was worth it to get service quality that I could completely trust. Good prices too.

Jaxon goes above and beyond, being not just a more focused mechanic with a broader skill set, but also the owner and a Super Tenere rider too. Besides you get to go for a ride! If that time chunk it's in your plans right now, use the resource above and make some calls. Ask how many YTA Gold moto techs they have, rather than just the shop having the certification.

Thanks for that link Eric! I'm going to call the dealer in Marshall , TX tomorrow. The link also showed me that the in town dealer isn't listed.
I find that strange because he's been in business a loooong time. I bought my first new motorcycle from him in 1974, a Suzuki GT250.
I would go over to Jaxon but it's two 200 mile trips for two vehicles.

That's a great link that should be a sticky!

Glad to help. Some dealerships, even with excellent techs, don't send them to the Yamaha schools or competitions, seeing it as paid vacation for the tech, instead of learning time and a perk for the dealership. I felt like the gold start rated techs really understood the bikes better when I spoke to them. Most of them were enthusiasts and riders too, not just a guy turning wrenches to pay the bills.

Good luck and report back on how the dealer you choose does. ::008::

You were going to trade for a Bmr anyhow, this was simply your excuse.

Did you spend money to buy protection for your bike, such as a skid plate?

Maintenance is part of owning a bike, I struggle to understand how trying to save 10 percent of a bikes value for rare maintenance makes more sense than spending another 40 percent to purchase a new ride to avoid spending less money.
