For $850 You can do better for side case than the Yamahas. But maybe it's the looks you are after.
Pete,
No, not looks, just a kit that works without alot of fiddling/another key, etc.
I'm very budget/open minded, school me please on your thoughts.
Was hoping to find someone who got theirs with bike purchase and were looking to dump because they hate them >:D
I'm batting a thousand here in the wanted forum, thought I'd make my next wish :)

thanks,

jb

Can't direct you specificly to another pannier but I was ready to go with a Happy Trails set up but got a good deal locally on a used Yamaha set (top box, side cases and mounts for $600). Dang Happy Trails were not ready when I was. I don't like the Yamaha's simply because they lack the ruggedness I desire. No they haven't failed (read: totally fallen apart) but the locks are touchy and the quality is a on the low side. I have to be careful that I've latched the locks just right or the lids may not lock. I would like a set up where I could just slam the lids shut and not worry about breaking something. To me, an extra key is a small issue compared to having to handle the cases with care in fear of something failing. If you "fall over" you stand a good chance of cracking the cases. Yes my cases are cracked and have been repaired. But like I said for $600 they were a good beta test for future cases. Now everytime I see a pannier setup, I'm checking them out for what I like to see. The Yamaha cases do look good but I suspect that won't last much long as they can show their wear and tear with the thin aluminum exterior. The internal bags are nice looking too.

I feel sorry for those who put up big Yamaha bucks ($1600ish) for these cases but if there are happy with them that's ok with me.

Anyone have the Yamaha installation instructions or can tell me how the locks are removed/installed?

Thx in advance!

I ordered the Happy Trails Teton 9.5" with top racks. I want to say total was $795 for racks, and panniers. Very good folks to work with. Im uber pleased with the cases, and their customer service. ::008:: Very simple tough design. The welds appear well done, and the hammertone black powdercoat is some pretty durable stuff from what I can tell. Locks are pretty simple things. I looked them over in a cursory fashion and I'm not certain you could swap over the OEM locks to the HT panniers. Then again I just glanced at them, not really in depth. I put the cost in with my bike loan. Dealer wrote me a check when I picked up my bike, and I ordered the same afternoon. I have a couple pics if youre interested in appearance.

Here's a pic from the manual that came with the cases in case you still need it. Very easy to put on or remove. They are the tiny torx security screws though.
