Windscreen turbulence

So I installed the side wind deflectors and the OEM touring windscreen trying to smoothen out the air hitting my helmet. Even fully up, I've noticed the air coming off the windscreen is louder hitting my helmet than if I stand up past it. I'm 5'11" and running seat in the high position.

Fully lowered, the air is still pretty loud, since its only moving the wind from the top of my helmet down to my chin.

It's loud enough I have to fun foamies; my pinlock earplugs don't do enough. I am not a fan of the gigantic-slat-of-plastic windscreens people often pair with the madstad; I imagine the problem just has to do with turbulence. I noticed the Puig and a few others have a lip at the top of the windscreen; does this resolve the issue? Anyone had luck modifying their windscreen with a similar lip, or have experiences with windscreens that solved the turbulence problem?

Hi
It might not be the answer you are looking for but have you ever consider to replace the stock windscreen with an "enlarged " one?
I replaced mine with a Givi one and I can drive with my helmet open even at 160km/h (100miles per hour)and over...
I have installed the "sidewing" too so they might help a little too...
I am shorter than you though because I keep my seat on the low position...

The simple fact is we are all different - different dimensions limbs/body, as well as our expectations.

I'm 6'.00'' & run my Gen2 with the standard screen on highest, along with Yamaha winglets & seat set low - perfect for me. Then I like to be looking forward over the screen, not through it. I use a Shoei full face helmet, which is noise sensitive if I open the forehead vent, so it stays shut, always with foam earplugs (-36dB).

Some riders use a screen top flipper blade, others use various after market screens, where I gather the Givi Airflow is a particular favourite. Otherwise check it's not your helmet, by taping over vents as necessary on a trial & error basis ... oh & check the mirrors, as their position can be critical.

The only bike that I've ever had that was quiet, was the ST1300. Raise the OE windshield all the way up, and it was almost silent. Other than that, I've always had wind noise. Since my priority is air flow, I just ignore the noise, and turn up my music.

Squibb is so right. Too subjective to have a "one & done fix", and too many variables.

I have a stock screen with the factory deflectors and a GIVI top clip on. Adding the clip on was significant improvement. Eliminated all the buffeting but still a bit noisy.

Best screen I ever had was a Windstrom with their top deflector on my Suzuki but they have sadly gone out of business

Do you have the airflow on a Gen2 bike?
Yes I do. I had to take off the accessory bar and the height adjustment mechanism, but that was no hardship because I always felt it vibrated too much to mount my Garmin on it even with struts fitted. The other thing that you need to do is to space out the bottom two screws with plastic numberplate nuts to allow the bottom of the screen to clear. Again, I felt this was a positive thing as it slightly alters the angle of the screen. Mike R passed on this tips to me as he had already gone down this route.

Take a look at this thread… https://yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?threads/givi-airflow-vs-stock-screen.29890/

By the way, mileage monster does not have a Givi Airflow screen on his bike in the picture, he has an adjustable lip on what looks like a stock screen.

I have the Madstad bracket with their 22" screen combined with OEM winglets. The ability to not only raise and lower but also tilt the screen permits a broad range of possibilities. When tilted fully back it actually scoops air and directs it at my chest, nice in hot weather. When fully raised and tilted forward it offers very good protection from rain. The only time that I experience helmet buffeting is in gusty side winds.
Me? 5' 11", 230lbs., seat leveled in high position.

I don't think that's an airflow... Givi air thing, yes... Airflow? I'm not seeing it. And I have an airflow on a GEN2 that I built onto a cut down stock screen.
It is a Givi Clip-on. That is what I wrote in my posting. The airflow is different. This small add-on took away all annoying buffeting and did that effortless. Best upgrade comfort-wise so far (next to the Cool Covers.) No need for any other changes of the screen. Oh, by the way, it sits on a regular OEM screen, no need for expensive other solutions. Keep it stupid simple and go from there. I did not need to go any further….

Clip on spoiler on a std screen works for me.
I also tried a Parabellum screen (the smallest of three sizes) with the clip on spoiler and that cut down so much wind it was too hot in the summer.

I have Gen 1 that I put the medium height V-Stream shield on before my Ak trip a few years ago. It was a little shorter than the Parabellum I had before. With the V-Stream, If I lower my head 1-2 inches all of the noise stops. I wound up getting a clip on for the top of the screen, which made a huge difference. The one I got off of Amazon ($25) sits a little high, because it was a generic one. If I'm doing long miles on the pavement I put it on. It does make an amazing difference in deflecting any bugs that would hit the helmet and visor, along with cutting the noise to almost zero. I do take it off if I am going off road due to the extra weight on top of the windshield. It flexes a lot & I am concerned about the shield mount brackets stress breaking because of the extra vibration. I do have the "winglets" which in the winter time, helps make riding much more bearable. I have not noticed any extra turbulence from them.

Did you have any issue with the screws that mount the winglets and the support bar? The screws that come with the winglets are pretty weak. Does the Madstad come with new screws for that area?

Hello keithert,
It was more than three years ago that I installed the Madstad bracket. The OEM bolts that came with the winglets are plastic with rubber bushings that allow the winglets to flex without breaking anything. I did re-use those bolts and bushings when I mounted the diagonal Madstad bracket braces. They have not been a problem as of yet with 40,000 kilometers traveled.
Regards,
