Over time the OEM rubber "Well-Nuts" dry out, and will possibly fail.

I live in a dry climate, and also ride a lot of rugged roads and trails.
I use an added wind-deflector mounted to the top of my OEM Windscreen, which puts added strain on these rubber well-nuts.

This season, towards the end of summer a couple of mine had started to fail. They had dried-out and became brittle.

Rather than order some new ones from Yamaha, I decided to source a less-expensive and more robust replacement.

I took the original Windscreen Screws over to ACE-Hardware and bought 4 lock-nuts, 4 washers, and 4 rubber-bushings that fit them.

After removing the original well-nuts out of the windshield Bracket, the new rubber Bushings fit the holes in the bracket perfectly!

Reassembled the Windscreen using the factory screws, and the washers with lock-nuts on the back side of the bracket.
It is very solidly mounted, and the washers could never pull through the holes in the bracket.

I don't remember how much exactly it cost, but it was somewhere around $6.00 for all the new hardware.
I think this is slightly less than the price for just (1) of the OEM Yamaha well-nuts.

Good idea. I wonder if Yamaha used the well nuts for the purpose of safety. If the rider goes forward he might end up with a nasty eyebrow or worse. The well nuts would probably pull through.
Maybe?
I know Yamaha have been using these on various bike for many years.
My '90 FJ1200 has similar ones to mount the windscreen. My '92 Seca-II had them also.
I would think it's more for vibration-dampening to prevent the windscreen from cracking?

I believe you can buy generic well nuts much cheaper than OEM. Probably in bulk on line. I have bought them for the winglets. I often remove the windshield with a drill/driver just to be able to clean it easily on both sides in a utility sink. Lock nuts would slow that down. I already have "dropsies" loosing nuts and such in the nether regions of the engine and side panels. Its hard to turn these bikes over to shake those loose parts out!!

And on the flip side your solution may keep something from coming through and into the rider. And I did something similar to what you did on a Madstad windscreen, removing the wellnuts and using something more substantial.

I believe you are correct about your drier climate having bad effects on the rubber well nuts .
Lots of talk about needing to replace rubber grommets on Goldwing because of the same issues but my Goldwing is 20 years old and very few grommets have ever needed replacement.

I've bought wel-nuts for the winglet/dashboard filler at Home Depot.
