If RELIABILITY is your primary factor, the S-10 wins, hands down. I live in Central America where Yamaha has dealerships every 100-200 miles. Not one other mfgr. comes close. And they stock S-10 parts, too. Lots of different bikes down here: kawasaki, Ducati, BMW, Harley, (no Honda big bikes), kTM, etc. Sure , others may be faster and lighter. But my 2014 S-10 always gets me home and never suffers "surprise" repairs. The slightly heavier weight allows better traction, better tire adhesion, and more comfort on a long trip. Takes potholes and speed bumps more comfortably, too. I chose this bike over all the others mainly for RELIABILITY, my friend. Sexy is for kids looking to impress other folks....or push your limits.. At 73, my S-10 gives me all the power and comfort I need for reliable 2-up riding without a worry in tbe world.....except for which B & B to stay in for the night. Good luck.
VERY HAPPY 2014 S-10 owner bere,

Went out for a ride on my tenere and called in at bike dealer (honda) to have a look round . A man who was doing some work to the shops alarm system came up to me to ask what i thought of the tenere . After telling him i said do you have a bike yourself, he said yes i have a one of the new watercooled bmw gs but i,m sick of running back and forth to the dealers , its on its second cylinder head . Its my second bmw i got my money back from bmw on the first one , when i was touring abroad i took a really tight turn and the handlebars hit the tank trapping my hand and i fell off . When the bike was examined they found bmw had welded the steering lock stop in the wrong place so they had to refund me .. I've been reading how bullet proof these tenere,s are have you had any problems . I said no nothing and this is my second one ...so to me being top of the sellers list year in and year out , being the lightest weight in its class , getting brilliant reviews means jack shxt if the thing is in for repairs all the time ... ::022::

One interesting thing I notice when I read comparisons is talk about the power of the KTM vs. the Tenere. Yet when you put the KTM into the off road mode the computer drops the power down to 100hp. Very similar to the Ten.

I was set on buying the KTM based on the reviews. Then i looked back at all the reviews and determined the S-10 never finished first or last, and was only a few scores away from the best. Buuuut, it never finshed last in the tests. Yup, I decided on the tweener - not the best, not the worst, and based on my current experience with Yamaha - no brainer.

I always find it interesting to read the personal comments from the editors. A lot of times they'll relate how this or that bike won, then add what they personally leaned toward or would buy with their own money. It's frequently not the bike that won.

Well i read all the reveiws before getting my 2015 XT1200ZE , but they did not put me off. Why - i have only ever owned Yamahas for the last 24 years and have had no dramas and know the standard of bike i am getting. Coming from R1's i knew the power would be way less that i am used to but comfort would be way better. The electronic suspension i thought would be a waste of money but it is realy great and the addjustments make a difference. The wind protection again is way better than a R1 so i'm happy. The handling is surprisingly good etc etc

My point is only you know what you want from a bike not a journalist who gets payed tojump on and play then write some stuff before he gets to go to spain for a superbike launch etc

I have spent 24 on sports bikes but wnated to swap to a Tenere in my old age and yes another 30 BHP would be welcome , i'll just get on and use what there is. Its a great bike and gets me from A to B in just as much fun as an R1 just in a slightly different way.

CW,
I have never gotten a spanking with such dignity! You are really good with the ruler. Very classy. ::012::

You might not know it, but I'm a PK (preachers kid) and I was NOT allowed to get into ANY trouble growing up. The pressure was intense! ???
Obviously, at nearly 60, I've recovered. But it's such a relief, even now, to find I, ME, have "crossed the line" and the world didn't come crashing down.
My dad is 83. I'm gonna BRAG to him that his 3rd child got in trouble. (There is a bunch of us offspring) He's mellowed a LOT. He'll be delighted. In fact, it'll make his day.

I rather like our debates and there sure is no problem with stating facts or your own thoughts and feelings. Watching our forum family spar can be entertaining. The line is where comments may no longer be taken in a positive way and the symptom is usually when people take something too personally or appear to strike out, whether intended or not.

Your trimmed phrase was just a response to a potentially demeaning sentence (probably not even intended to be that way) and I think I know you well enough to know you meant no harm. But emotions were starting to enter and after several posts, yet another person joined in with a definite bitter shot. We can't see body language here and it was either remove all the comments or leave a mess by trimming one or two. So don't take it personal and this way works easier all around. The trimming shears come out when telling others what their opinion should be, or in your case to not leave something hanging.

As AvGeek posted last year:

btw - Before anybody thinks this is heavy handed, start to watch how much more deleting and trimming goes on unannounced at the big forum. You'll suddenly realize that entire exchanges are gone, and heaven-forbid you mention this or any other forum in the big one. Here, we hardly ever give time-outs and frequently note when editing does happen.

So much for tonight's peek behind the curtain. Back to our regularly scheduled and never-ending debate.

Ahhhh, now I get it! Preachers kid turns preacher at the pulpit of the ST! ::018::

Some here claim the ST to be more reliable then a BMW. I follow several forums and from what I read I suspect the LC GS/GSA is at least as reliable as the ST.
Sure BMW has had reliability issue, mostly 2006-2009, but it seems they are now taking decisive action to sweep those old bones out of the closet and the LC units were designed with that in mind.
Yamaha has also had issue..... none of them are perfect.

I don't buy into the theory that magazines are more favorable to European bike because of advertising dollars. I do think magazines are favorable to bike with big HP, high tech do-dads, excellent handling, etc..... it gives them something to wright about. Seems to me the magazines have heaped piles of praise on the FZ/FJ-09, early FJR's, R1 with cross plane motor, Yamaha has done a lot of great things.

If the bike you're riding makes you smile you're riding the right bike! ::021::

::026:: The true source of BMW's numerous issues.... And that includes the 4 wheeler's too.

Mind you, Audi ain't much better - AUDI stands for Always Under Diagnostic Investigation...

Your honor, I would like to present a Screen shot a couple months back of the GS Forum, I do not think I need to present one of this forum as we are all a part of it, the evidence speaks for itself.

Hell, there is a brand new 2015 GSA that has to have it's motor replaced ..... look on the other big site. You can say what you want , there is absolutely No way the BMW is as reliable as the Tenere. Not even close.

And thus the ONLY real reason the Tenere is the platform I choose to make long-term investment in.

If I could remove the suspicion of torment from the equation, I would be doing my thing on the machine that is the de facto bike of this genre.
Or, if I could agree to the strategy of only owning fresh and warrantied samples. (irritating to even consider)

Drives me nuts. It should be the bike that it rightfully earned the branding\badge of.
It might be true that it is getting better. But press or no press, if and when it does become the most reliable and well built bike, it will be just as obvious as the Tenere is today.

Bikes today, like cars, are all good. It just boils down to hype. Bigger this, stronger that, etc. It is like stereo music. It is so good now can one "really" tell the difference between a pair of speakers that cost $85,000 or $5,000.
I love my 2014ES Tenere. Had a bunch of BMW's...nice bikes.
I am sure if the Tenere had 175 HP something else would not be "good enough." It sells bike magazines...and bikes. My attitude, at 68, is do what you think is best for you. If you want to ride naked and without a helmet...do it! For me life is too short to nit pick everything to death. Everything, bike and car wise, is so much better in 2015 than 1962...spend time enjoying it. Take an nice 6,000 mile bike trip. Your bike will be fine...even it only has 100 hp!!
