Who's running a TPMS system?

Looking at a few different options on a tpms with the cap that goes on the valve stem. External style like the Hawks Head . http://www.tpms.ca/MOTORCYCLE.html. All of them say to use a metal valve stem only but as you know our Tenere has a rubber stem. Anyone ran one of these on a rubber stem with success or is this a no go? I've done some reading on here and it seems with our style of wheel there isn't really another metal valve stem that works? Or is there one that works that I'm missing?

Did a tpms on my previous versys and it was a complete waste of money...my tires were leaking air and the reading was not as accurate as I expected....but again that was my individual experience...

Have the garmin ones on the rubber stems and they have been fine for about 2 years no problem. For the last 6 years have them on our Landrover on rubber stems no issues on our rtw trip.

Do you have problems with the rear sensor disconnecting from the Garmin?

I have a 590lm the rear sensor always disconnects while riding. I have swapped the sensors out, deleted pairings and re-paired. it seems as though the tenere is a little long and the sensor is just out of range.

It only bothers me as the system continuously throws up warnings that the rear sensor is no longer connected which shits me to tears.

I also have a 590 Garmin with TPMS on rubber stems. I have had the rear lose contact a time or two but it isn't that frequent. Reminds me, I need to buy some batteries for this season.

Really like the system, BTW

I looked at the external tpm systems in the UK.

The advantage of tpm systems is to give the rider an early warning of tyre pressure loss and is therefore a safety aid. But by fitting them to a machine without metal valve stems you are increasing the chances of a rapid deflation as the rubber stem gives way.

In my opinion you are trying to fit a safety device against the manufacturers recommendations that will increase the chances of a puncture.

Fitting a safety device that potentially could create more danger is not for me!

I don't buy the rubber valve stem danger.

I change my own tyres and I know just how hard it is to remove a rubber valve stem and just how hardy they are, if the valve stem is in good condition there is no way it is going to fail due to the tiny bit of weight from the sensor.

IMHO The warning is just a potential liability thing in the same way the Garmin sensors also say not for automotive use, and the same as how so many motorcycle mods say not for road use.

I installed the sensors purely so I didn't have to get on my knees to check the pressures manually.

I have the Garmin TPMS and a 590. I did swap out the valves. No big deal really so why not do it...peace of mine I guess. I haven't had any connectivity issue as of yet. I wonder if the metal valve stem acts as an antenna...just a thought.

So far working well.

Several years ago I had to calculate the weight of an ounce of rubber at the periphery of an airplane tire which failed at takeoff, and that radius would be about the radius of our rims. By memory, at something like 130 mph (?) that ounce of rubber was the equivalent of a bowling ball.

Doran's sensor is really small and their web page says the sensor weighs 0.49 ounce.

The best system now is Tire Watch from murphskits.com
I didn't use the valve stems that come with the kit, I removed them from the sensors and glued the sensors into the inside of the rims with shoe goo and kept my own steel valve stems in place, I secured the sensors with SS lock wire for extra measure but I don't think it's necessary , used this system for 2 years now and very happy with it.

I have the Show Chrome TPMS system and have used it on Three different Motorcycles. It worked great on the rubber valve stems, but I currently have had installed the metal stems after a friend cut his valve stem riding in rocky trails. I have been very impressed with how accurate it has been.
