Just had my dealer tell me that they will replace the CCT with the upgraded version and cover it under warranty. I dropped it off for the 26k mile service and some other things.

I had what I deemed an excessive amount of noise, technician agreed.
I have the same problem. My tensioner now rattles like something is loose in the engine. I place an order for a replacement yesterday. I was told two to three weeks.

I am a bit curious, does more rattling imply an imminent mechanical failure?

I had the opportunity this week to ride Autoteach's Super 10 with the new clutch basket and cam tensioner. What a difference from my stock 2013 S10! Quiet at idle and much smoother through the 3000-3500 rpm band. It's an impressive improvement. Thanks, Autoteach, for the ride.

I don't know if it means imminent mechanical failure but it sure was annoying. It would rattle for about 10 seconds on startup and a couple ticks on hot idle(at stop lights).

The manual says to push with a screwdriver "here" and in "this" direction. Are we pushing it or tapping it? How do I know if the CCT released?

By "click" do you mean a faint "click" as in your environment better be quiet or you may not hear it even over a grunt? The guide itself went from hardly any movement to no movement at all under pretty good pressure being applied to the screwdriver, does that sound right?

I take it there is no way to visually confirm the release of the tensioner without pulling it out (which would mean re-retracting it).

FYI, I had the clutch cover off during the removal of the original CCT so I can watch the chain and I did not see or hear any chain movement during the process.

To answer my own question, no. Pushing it didn't work for me. I had to hit the end of the screw driver with a mallet to release it. When I hit it with the mallet the guide moved and snapped back into position. To check I hit the screw driver with the mallet a bit harder and the guide didn't budge at all.

I saw a Facebook post from Nick Sanders where he mentioned his S10 had just passed 90,000 miles (he was in the US leading a tour). I messaged him and told him about my CCT issues, just in case he wanted to change his. "No problems with mine" he said - then a week later I he posts that he'd changed it "as a precaution" .

He must have contacts at Yamaha to get it changed so quick! ;)

More likely, like many of us high mileage guys, he didn't think a little rattle on start up was anything to really worry about, after all, it goes quiet after that.... After your FB post maybe he thought more about it and discovered some of us have had some issues and got it taken care of. :D Hope he didn't have to go thru what you or I have.

Well I'm embarrassed to say this but I dropped mine and the bloody thing snapped open. And I've tried with no luck to get the thing back together. $175 Canadian . ::010::

A vice and patience, or stop by the dealer and beg for assistance.

Or a drill press and a 12 or 13mm socket to push the plunger down works very well, too. All is not lost limey - you'll get it ::008::

That happened to me also I had to use some Anti-Seize on the screw part so it would screw back in. I worked on it for over 2 hour before I put the Anti-Seize on it.

A couple of things that may not be clear. When using the drill press it's (not) on!
Your just using the assistance of the table and the chucks ability to apply light pressure downward.
Put a 3/8" extension or similar in the chuck with a 13mm socket on it. Fits the plunger. Assemble the cct.
You may need to lightly put the body of the cct into a drill press vice.
Rotate the plunger of the cct clockwise slowly, kinda hard due to the oil, make sure the circlips are expanded.
It may even require a third hand.
Go slow!
