Which Windscreen Mods Should I Get?

Just got my bike out on it's first all-day voyage. 45F and humid made me long for a little bigger screen. I'm 5'9" and when I slouch 3" I am out of the buffeting. What screens are 3" taller than stock and just a bit wider? (2" overall) It seems like that would perfect. But should I get the Madstad bracket too? Would I appreciate it? Oh, I wear a road helmet and don't plan to use an off-road style helmet as 90% of my riding is paved.

I'm 5'8" and most of my riding on the Super Tenere is on pavement. Had the same issue as you have. I first tried a CalSci "Medium" (http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/Tenereprod.html) but it was very upright and didn't work for me at all.

Then I went to a Parabellum "Medium" 22" screen (http://parabellum.com/stores/showdetl.cfm?&DID=22&Product_ID=79&CATID=3) and it's been perfect. So good I haven't seen to even try anything else in the past 23,000 miles or so since I installed it.

Smooth, quiet airflow, no buffeting, etc. for me. Much better quality and finish than the CalSci, and much more optically correct than any other windscreen I've ever tried on any other bike. I love it.

Just FYI...

I use the Madstad with the factory touring screen and wings. I can't compare it to the other solutions but it's a huge upgrade over stock, and the adjustability is a very big deal.

Downside is that you're likely to expose the black plastic shroud in front of the instrument panel directly to wind and flying rocks. I already have a small scratch on my shroud from something like that.

Helmets with visors probably will be louder than normal, but that visor is VERY handy when you're commuting east in the morning or west in the late afternoon.

I have the tall Yamaha windshield with the Madstad windshield bracket. It works great and cuts down a lot fo the windnoise with no helmet buffeting (even at 100+mph). I'm 6'2" and this works great for me.

Any interfearence with the hand guards?? Thought that was an issue with Parabellum?

You don't have to have the madstad up so high. That is what makes it great, you can lean it forward or back, raise it up or down. Whatever makes you happy! ::013::

Thanks for all the quick replies, gents. Off all my nits from my first shake-down tour on my new Ténére, wind buffeting was one I know will bother me all year. It didn't bother me on the dozen 20-30mile rides I've done. But in humid 45F weather with my visor cracked open 2-3cm to prevent fog - it really was fatiguing to the eyes and ears (since I left my earplugs at home).

I am committed to starting with a bigger screen and will try that first, with an adjustable bracket second if it's needed. However, I am curious about that MRA wing (vs. simply a bigger screen) as it seems it might allow cooling airflow that I could use at slow speeds in Summer.

If I'm looking to buy just one new addition, I need to figure out what I'll like best overall. I wondered if the MRA wing would flutter at speed, and how it was adjusted. (It wasn't obvious).

I have the madstad bracket, and the original wind screen. The madstad allows you to tilt the screen just enough with the elevation that takes the wind right over your head. I tried new shields without the madstad, and the bracket makes the world of difference. It seems as though it is the angle of the shield that makes the huge difference. It worked for me at 5'9".

You might want to try the Madstad or Tobinator screen adjuster first. With the Tobinator on mine the stock screen works great (5'7", 30" inseam). The Yamaha side deflectors also make a difference.

I have th MRA Vario on a Wasp bracket and like it a lot. The wing doesn't flutter or move at all at speed, unless you move it. It has detents on each side bracket and the instructions tell you not to adjust while moving and to grasp it gently on each side and click it to whatever notch position suits you at the time. In practice, I just reach up wth my left hand while riding and adjust it. Works great.

I just installed the MRA Vario Touring Screen, I would not recommend it. This screen has poor optical clarity. It is so bad that it looks like it has a haze on it. This is not acceptable.

This is my thought, on sportsbikes I rode for 20+ years the screens were lower, but much closer and did not give off the low frequency booming I have found on adventure bikes, with a large upright screen they stop buffeting and the "Whoosh" noise (and I can hear my music at higher speed) but I do get lower frequency noise (a bit like when you have the far side car window down, you feel no wind, but hear it clearly enough)

Also if I move forward (not necessarily up) I end up in a much quieter zone, so my thinking is if I could tio my Givi back a shade it would do a much better job, really want to see a madstad on a Tenere first though.

here you go:

http://www.madstad.com/s.nl/sc.7/category.3189/.f

The red prototype is on my bike. I have no relationship to Mark, but he lives close to me, and I have the ability for him to use my bike as a prototype. I used the bracket in several configurations and found that what worked best for me was the original screen and the bracket tilted nearly straight up and near the top of the range.

This just isn't true. The one you have must have some kind of problem because the optical clarity on mine is perfect and I have had MRA screens before without any problems. They are a really high quality product. I would get it back to wherever you bought it and get it replaced.
