what kind of mileage are you looking for?
A bike with close to 100 hp, and 570lb without rider will not be terrific on gas. your right wrist is your worst enemy.
I stopped paying attention. My tenere gets the same gas mileage around town as my TDI wagon...maybe slightly better.

I'm easily getting 200+ per tank, mostly in S-mode, and sometimes hitting 200kph when I can on some highways, mostly hard on the throttle. But I did ride a 900 mile day not long ago and was getting 19.4 km per liter, on the highway at 130-140 kph via GPS. Stock bike and standard ( crappy) screen.

My 2012 S10 gave me 250 miles per tank riding briskly. My 2014ES is even better on gas. If you're only getting 35mpg, doesn't sound right. What type of gas are you running? Real gas or Kalifornia corn oil.

I run California gas ::002:: Not the issue

I regularly see 42 - 44 mpg on my rides if it is warm. If it is cold It might drop to 34 - 36. My reserve lights comes on around 180 miles and I am good for another 50 miles before it runs dry.

On our trip to and from Arkansas saw a variety of fuel qualities and conditions but we averaged just under 50 us mpg over 6500 miles. usually at 70-75 mph from gps or 3800-4000 rpm .we usually stopped for fuel at around 200 miles on the tank and each bike took just over 4 us gallons on average to fill. Three bikes all travelling at the same speed and buying the same fuel. One completely stock one with flash and stock ex and one with flash, arrow header and yosh muffler. Slow acceleration and steady state throttle allow the oxygen sensors to control the fuel inj system in closed loop getting the best mpg. Of course your right hand can over ride that as well as colder air temp. Always seem to use more fuel in the winter time.

... stock ECU
... clutch safety switch mod
... mostly ride in touring mode
... 3/4 turn out on the TB's
... C02 @ 3
... stock exhaust
... 91 octane (California "crap" gas)
... normally average 43 (same as Toompine)

In July we took a trip through WY and as far as MT
... using non-California gas
... traveling at 3800-4000 rpms
... 91 octane (non-California gas)
... got as high as 59 mpg

UT and WY gasoline is amazing. Used Sinclair most of the time. We found out that Sinclair is allowed to produce a 91 octane non-Ethanol gasoline. I call it Super Gas.

As others mentioned "throttle play" is our enemy. I don't use a cruise control but would guess a CC would tell the tale.

Also, I find that when exceeding 4,000 rpms the gas mileage drops off quickly.

Besides the pure 91gas, the average elevation of WY is like 5,000 ft. The air density is around .68 if 1.00 is sea level. Point is the wind resistance is way down too.

Yes. What about panniers, mirror extenders, larger wind screen, aux lights? All of those create more wind resistance and diminish mpg. That said, right wrist is your main issue from the list of mods you present.

Go HERE and have a read. It may be easier for you to add more fuel capacity than to change your preferred riding style.

No affiliation, but I did pick up almost 2 mpg when I switched to a Parabellum windshield that I run in the cooler months. My steady state transit has been as high as 51 mpg but that's not typical, usually more like 47. Routine riding is about 43-45, hooligan factor excluded. Riding with friends on spirited rides, heh heh, not so much...

I talked to Erine and the price tag of $1000 plus shipping kinda turned me off...Also need to be able to convert back to stock when wife goes with...

I concur with tomatocity...climb up above 4K on the tach, and file mileage drops off considerably....it's very easy to get there on these western desert highways...

I can appreciate those aspects. Custom fuel cells are not something that you can manufacture quickly, and time & quality cost money. I've paid that price twice in the last 10 years or so. When I sold the first one, they were no longer available and I got 1.5 times the original purchase price, plus shipping.

FWIW, the fuel cell comes off in 5 minutes and you can toss the passenger seat back on. Ernie also sells a non-flat bed design that fits on the back rack area and allows use of the passenger seat at the same time. The current design is slightly different from mine, but should still be very simple to remove and replace as needed.

Back to your original questions - depending on which flash you have, that may not impact the mpg all that much. The CO really shouldn't impact much either. The Arrow exhaust, perhaps. But really it's about riding style and wind resistance to a large degree. I used to ride with a guy with the exact same bike, year, ect, but he had a larger windscreen and big 6" aux lights and he consistently got 4 mpg less than I did, riding together, with equally smooth riding styles. It was just the extra wind resistance of his choice of accessories.
