Tim, if you're referring to our southern Sierra ride, it's May 22-24. If you just want to ride Generals Highway, it's a good day ride for me. Shoot me a few dates that work for you.

Reading your replies make me think i have postpone my trip by another week. I seem to have misjudged the arrival of spring. I work shift so another 4 days of holiday will give me 9 days extra riding. The limiting factor is my wife's patience.
Thanks also for all the offers of a bed, food and beverages. I hope to meet some of you on this trip. I will post the skeleton of the trip soon and then we can add the meat. This is going to be so cool.
Tomatocity, thanks for the link to Desert Dave. REM, I will be doing that road on my way back ::26::
Hobester - fortunately i live 20 hours flying and another 4 hours drive from my outlaws. Your 1000mile "limit" is something to think about. i figured if the shit hits the fan i will catch a plane if i cannot ride - hopefully i am close enough to an airport that can fly my home.

Yes I do want to ride Generals Highway (I will call you)... but I was seeing if SSR fit into immigrant's schedule. It does not. Too bad.

Call any time. We're leaving Sunday for Morro Bay to do some camping. Yes, Crusher will be with us.

Another question. When do the "school holidays" start in the US? I am trying to avoid the crowds (if at all possible) i am also not familiar with your public holidays (called statuary holidays in canada) will there be any during end of may beginning june?

When students get out of school for summer break varies with the school/state, but for primary school (K-12), it is generally early June, but may move around a week or two. For college, the variability is even more because some schools are on the quarter system and others semester. But summer vacation traffic starts ramping up through June. July and Aug are the most popular vacation months.

The big spring holiday in the US is Memorial Day which is the last Monday in May, this year May 27th. This weekend is a pretty busy one. Mem Day is typically considered the official start of summer and tourist activity picks up pretty dramatically from this point going forward.

Other summer holidays are Independence Day July 4th, and Labor Day which is the first Monday in Sept, Sept 2nd this year.

thanks Markjenn. Looks like there is no way to avoid the crowds
Except for the super-popular spots (e.g., Yellowstone, Yosemite, etc.), the areas you're in are pretty remote and wide-open so I doubt crowds will be much of a concern.

i don't know if this will show up on your screens, but here is a link to my route so far. Highlights will be Lolo Pass, Yellowstone, Beartooth Highway and Going to the Sun and of course the Canadian Rockies.
ANY SUGGESTIONS will be welcome.

Immigrant, if you're going to visit a bunch of national parks, get yourself an annual pass. It's $80 and covers unlimited entries. You'll come out ahead quite quickly. http://store.usgs.gov/pass/annual.html

Hello immigrant, Welcome to the Forum. If you are able to get to the south regions, be sure to tour some of the great riding opportunities in The Great Smokey Mountains and surrounding Tennessee areas. Tennessee is graced with great riding areas throughout the state with lots of interesting sites to see. This link http://smokymountainrider.com/?p=695 is a great site to get you started on some very nice routes to try out. Hope you enjoy your journey and if you do get through Tennessee, Give me a heads up and I can try to tag along for a bit and enjoy some of your trip as well

Cheers

Just a quick question before leaving on my trip. What is general rule at US gas stations - do you pump and then pay, or go pay and then pump

Most are pay first, but you could use a card at the pump in most locations. Have cash available for rural locations which might not be with the times! Where did you decide to go?

my basic plan is posted somewhere on this thread. Will head through Canadian Rockies and head south to Montana, Yellowstone if not too many holiday crowds then and maybe further south to the grand canyon if time and weather permits. I have 25 days before i have to be back home. No real plans - will find out from the locals where the nice roads are ::001::

You will run into problems gasing up at some of the self service stations , you can try this and it does work. Hope this helps. It's from ADVRider.

Ok, if you're like me, you've been annoyed by the throngs of gas pumps in the US that insist on prepayment but, after going through all the Credit steps, spoil your efficiency because they want your zip code.

I believe a couple buddies and I have found the solution. It was presented to us by a wonderful little lady behind the counter at one of these stations who provided us with a SECRET CODE.

Here's how it works:

You need to fabricate a zip code which will allow the credit card company to verify the billing address for your credit card. The new zip code is created using your existing postal code.

For example, if your postal code is

A1B 2C3

Then your zip code is 12300.

See what just happened there? You take the three digits in the order that they appear in your postal code, then tack on two zeroes.

Some examples:
Santa (H0H 0H0) would use 00000 for his backup generator (since feeding gasoline to reindeer is illegal).
Mr. Harper (T2V 5A8) would use 25800 when filling up his Camaro on a trip to Vegas.
The minister of international trade (L9N 1M7) would use 91700 to fuel his pickup carrying softwood lumber.

You get the idea so now go and try it and let us know how it worked out for you.

CAVEATS:
1. We only had success with Visa but in fairness only tried MC once.
2. We only tried this in Washington State - as that's where we were before coming back across the border.
3. If you use this for criminal gain, karmageddon will find you.

good to know. My code will be 91100 ::) Hope no alarms and sirens go off when i punch it in. will a simple PIN number not suffice?

The reason i ask, is because in the "old country" you did not even have to get out of your truck to pay for gas. There is a friendly, underpaid attendant that asks you how much gas you want, he fills your truck, you give him the cash and he comes back with the change if needed, or you give him your card, he goes inside, do the swipe thing, brings it back and you sign the slip.

When i came to canada i figured all gas stations will be the same, so i pull up and waited at least 10 minutes for the "attendant" to show up - he never did so i go inside to ask what i need to do to get gas? The guy inside, with a confused look on his face, says you fill your own truck. I never in my life filled my own truck and could not figure out what levers etc to pull/switch to start the pump, so i go back and ask for help. My new friend behind the counter thinks i am bullshitting him and gets real mad, but explains none the less. So i fill up and go back inside to pay. He asks me "how much?" I say "how much what?" He says "gas you idiot" Now i am confused (thinking he should have some display behind the counter) so I say "you trust me enough to tell you how much gas i put in my truck? I could tell you $10 but put in $100, but I filled it with $92". (Canadians obviously don't steal, cheat or lie, and so i was very happy i chose this country to live in). Now he is real mad, storms out, double checks the pump and comes back. I give him $100. He says "do you have a toonie" I am thinking wtf? "A toonie?? What the hell is a toonie" (not knowing that canucks call a $2 coin a "toonie"). Now he is frothing at the mouth, throws a $10 at me and said "get out of my store you f*cking IMMIGRANT :D :D

I just want to avoid the above situation from happening again!!!! ::008::
