Where do you fix your license disc holder?

I recently added the Touratech crash bars on my 2013 S10 and in so doing had to displace the road license disc. Notwithstanding the numerous bolts and nuts on the bike, I am finding it rather difficult to find a suitable mounting point for the disc holder. I can't do it towards the rear as I often put on my OEM side cases. Don't want to fix it to anything like an engine mount since this would require quite some torque. I shouldn't fix it to anything that gets hot.

Where do you fix your license disc holder? Photos would also be nice to see.

Are you even required to display a tax disc these days? I thought it was all electronically held on data base (UK of course). Otherwise remove a mirror and bolt the tang on the mirror and bend it downwards

Oh yes you have to display the disc in Malta. It's a piece of cake for the traffic warden to issue a ticket for not displaying it.

As for fixing the disc to the mirror, that's really 'displaying' an ugly and unwanted accessory :)

Some US States require inspection or permits and they are usually a sticker that folks put on a fork. If people don't want to put it right on the fork, a lot will simply cut out a small piece of aluminum like these, which are just from a quick web search.

When we had tax disc's in the UK I used the mounting point behind the passenger footpeg on the exhaust side. It's out of sight enough not to look ugly but still visible enough to keep the rather zealous traffic wardens happy.

Just out of interest are the 'bendy buses' still banned or are they back on the fleet ?

The bendy busses are gone for good (and so is the fleet operator 'Arriva' that got them). You got rid of them in London by selling them to us in Malta. We soon realised our costly mistake.

Ah, so Arriva has gone too, so who's operating the buses now ? Have the government taken them back in-house ? We always get a bus permit when we go to Malta as it's just so cheap and convenient, although that's as a tourist not as a commuter however.

The bus service is operated by a Spanish firm (for more than a year now). Service is OK till now. Let me know when you visit and perhaps we could meet.

Another thought on mounting the tax disc is to get a simple 1" clamp to go over the crash bars and use that to mount the tax disc. Even just a electrical conduit clamp would suffice. You could use this on the bike frame in several places as well.

I sell these clamps in black and orange. You can probably find something similar local to you. It's just a molded plastic piece with a simple steel U around it for strength and a bolt/nyloc nut. People use them for small lights or other light accessories like tool tubes.

Thanks EricV. After going over the bike a million times (with hypnotizing effect) I fixed the disc holder to the exhaust shield just ahead of the foot break pedal. I replaced the front bolt of the shield with a slightly longer one and used spacers to fill in the recess where the bolt rests. The length of the bolt has to be measured accurately as if it's too short it will not reach into the nut on the back of the exhaust shield, and if it's too long you will not be able to tighten it as it will hit the exhaust pipe.

The disc holder now rests horizontal to the exhaust pipe shield and is pretty much hidden away.
