I rode an '09 GSA yesterday and was quite impressed. It had 38K kms on the clock and full set of Jesse bags. The dealer is asking $12,499.

I'm still interested in a ST however I see many 2012 models for sale here in the classifieds.

Are the 2012 not as good as the newer models?

The newer (2014+) Gen2 Teneres are very similar in nearly all respects, it's just that they have cruise control, an option for electronic suspension, and other refinements. If you are looking at the 8 year old GSA then the Gen1 Tenere will feel remarkably similar and you can find them priced into the low US$6,000's range. Look before leaping into an 8 year old GSA and know about the transmission, rear drive, & other potential issues.

Lets not forget that some Gen1 Teneres have some electrical ghost with the High to no idle. Factory Mapping IMO sucked Re flashed my ECU and although not necessary, replaced the clutch basket.
On the other hand you may score an older Tenere with a ton of expensive farkle goods still attached to the frame that will save you lots of money. ::024::
Your neck of the woods the 2012 is a little high IMO the 14 I would look at..

The Beamer will love your wallet in the end.. Maybe cool maybe status but reliability is the thing you want, and the Ten has it.

The '14 looks great except it's over $13K in CDN dollars which seems high to me.

The '12 seem more like it should go for $9500-$19K

Were it $10K CDN that would be attractive. For reference a new ES is $17K in Canada.

Yup it's the reliability question that always rattles around in the back of my mind.

Shop around because you can get a new leftover 2016 for just a grand more than that GSA. I just got my 2017 for $14,200 + TTL in Houston. There were quite a few 2016's left around this area and only a few 2017's out yet. ::012::

Unfortunately that's not the case in Canada. A 2016 ES goes for $16,999 in my neck of the woods.

I have JUST bought a spanking new 2017 ES, on Vancouver Island, for $17300 including freight & PDI. Actually took a puddle jumper from the mainland to pick it up, was still worth it, saved over $1500 compared to what they would be worth on the mainland if anyone except the Walmart of motorcycle dealers had any in stock

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Gen 1 in good shape. Bought my 13 new a year ago. Best bike I've owned (14th bike). Have 11K on it now, rides like a charm on and off road. No clutch issues, no electrical issues, don't need cruise, heated grips or ES - so no regrets. Would buy another one.

Courtenay, PM me for a contact if you wish, the guy was great; I took the last ES, as of a couple weeks ago there was still a while non-es available, for about 1k less

To the OP -- now that i have about 2.5K on the bike and have had a chance to ride a variety of roads/dirt, solo and 2-up, i believe the ES to be worth it. FWIW i came off an oilhead GS and KLR, sold both to get the s10

The appeal of the ES is the capability to make on-the-fly suspension adjustments. Cruise control is less high. on my list of desired options.
The GSA we rode was [Bold]plush[bold/] two-up on the comfort setting.
There's loads of used Gen 1 bikes for sale in the US (I'm in Canada) which is appealing however a bit more challenging to sort out.

A couple of fellows local to me have generously offered to let me see and ride their bikes.

I'm not keen on spending a huge whack of cash so I figure I sell/trade my Tiger. A trade is the most expensive because I would lose on the trade-in and have to get into a new bike whereas selling it and buying a used one lets someone else take the depreciation hit. Plus a new bike in Canada comes with the luggage which seems to have persnickety locks. I'd rather get a discount on the luggage and put on panniers of my choosing.

I'd prefer a Gen 2 for the ES but they don't seem to come up used terribly often in this corner of the world.

Wow! A three-year old left over! That's a patient dealer to be sure!

Don't overlook a Gen 1. They are great bikes.
You can customize it to your liking and they are very inexpensive.
A flash (done by Anthony, a forum member), 14 clutch basket, and a rear shock revalve/spring will make the bike even better. There is a factory heated grip kit you can add too.
Very underrated bike.

What's the story on the need for new clutch basket?

Did mine (2012 @ 60,sumthin thousand miles) and I feel it was worth the cost. Smoother, quieter and more refined throttle response. Tensioner is more important. Take care of it ASAP.
