Did 9470 kilometres on the Metzlers and fitted a new one yesterday. Could have done another 1000 kms still but had a persistent slow leak, so decided to replace earlier. Well i dont know if I got good milage/likomters from it or not. Would like to know what milage one can expect from a rear tyre that is often averaging about 145km/h and doing about 30% duty on dirt roads.

The Tourances are renowned for good mileage - probably the highest mileage 90-10 tire out there, so I'd say your results are average or maybe slightly less than average. However, there are some rumors that the EXP's do notably worse than the standard Tourances, so perhaps that might be a factor. In any event, I'd say there is nothing unusual about your mileage and it is well withing the considerably wide range that people experience.

Metzler's...

Not a bad road, hard pack tire (90/10), but I need something more 50/50 or 60/40. The wet grass and soft soil was treacherous today with side slipping galore. Damn near ate it several times today just turning around at the end of a trail because of the side slip (lateral pushing or hitting a muddy rut).

Any 50/50 or 60/40 suggestions?

The gold standard here is the Conti TKC80, but they're pricey, don't last terribly long, and IMHO, are a big step-down in pavement handling (as you'd expect with such an aggressive tire - big knobs are not the hot ticket for pavement work). There has been a lot of talk about new Shinko and Heidenau tires for this application (Advrider has a lot of threads), but I have no personal experience.

One strategy that works surprisingly well is to stick to the 90-10 tires, but carry a pump and air down aggressively when you hit challenging conditions. This works to a point, but run into serious mud and you're going to be in trouble. Of course, any serious mud is also likely to pack the front fender and lock the front wheel also. The bike has limitations other than tires.

Have you looked at the new design on the Heidenau K60? It has a solid center for improved highway miles, but has a decent knob pattern for dirt as well. Jaxon, aka Tabasco, has an order coming in soon and is selling them via PM to him on here. I have a friend that does a decent amount of off road with his FS800 and says that the K60 is his favorite tire, but usually has to settle for the Conti because the K60 is hard to get. He says that the K60's outlast his Conti's by quite a bit.

a couple of ladies rode around Alaska, and Canada for 40 + days recently on new Triumph Tigers with the new K60 Scouts on them. They still have considerable life left in them at 13000 km. I would say this is pretty good considering the road surfaces, fully loaded and alot of straight up riding!!! Neither of the two bikes had a flat, even running up to Prudhoe. The story is over on ADV.

It's not a rumour - I got 11,000 miles out of the old Tourance on my Vee, 6,000 miles from a Tourance EXP (so, about the same as Yahmy got on his S10). I don't know how they get to call the new versions "Tourance" actually, it has nothing in common except it's black and round and made by Metzler. Maybe to con people into thinking they were buying a high-mileage tire? Worked on me! But only once. Yes, it does grip and handle much better than the old Tourance, but don't expect the same sort of mileage from it.

Battle Wings for my bike. I had always wondered what I'd get as I awaited delivery. Granted I only waited a few weeks not many months. I am sad this poll closed in 13 days. I had to check thinking maybe it started in 2010 .... I like polls what can I say other than I feel left out.
Boo hoo for me.
Good poll.
