What's wrong with the Tenere? It will go through more gas and tires than any other motorcycle you have owned!

I don't get the comments on wind being an issue

Having spent 25 years on fully faired sportsbikes the S10 is almost entirely unaffected, I have had a ZZR1100 and a ZZR1400 and both get pretty hairy in high winds with it feeling as if your front wheel is gonna wash away at any second - and at any speed, never got blown over / off but sure have been bricking myself a few times, since turning to Adv bikes I have not experienced anything really but clenching.

I used to live in Las Vegas, which could give Chicago a run for the title "Windy City"! I remember one wind storm rolling in where we had 67mph gusts, and I was on the FJR that day. I had to get from my new office at the south end of the strip to my home near Mt Charleston, which is about a 20 mile ride (depending on the route I took). That day, I never got on the freeways, and it took me over an hour and a half to get home, clenching my teeth and trying to predict the gusts all the way.

Fast forward to this summer, and my return trip from the Colorado Rally. I came south through Campbell, AZ to Flagstaff, and that stretch was easily one of the windiest I have ever ridden. I just tucked down a bit and leaned into the wind, and the ST handled it all no questions asked...

:D Almost got a Zuma. I remember that.
When they called me to record that, it was a Vstar950! And I lost the track when I was having hard drive issues, and they don't have it on their website anymore...

Just got it yesterday, but it's like my Jeep with 2 wheels.
Wouldn't have it any other way. All my vehicles are 4X4, except my Road King. You gotta cruise every once in awhile ::013::

What wrong with the Tenere'???

Kind of subjective. In a nutshell other than a fine commuter bike, it's lacking in all sorts of stuff that our friends at Cycle World (who really LIKED the Tenere') found in this bike:

http://www.cycleworld.com/2014/01/15/ktm-1190-adventure-road-test-review-photos-specifications/?cmpid=enews011614&spPodID=020&spMailingID=6015168&spUserID=NDA4NTQ4MTAxODES1&spJobID=361576242&spReportId=MzYxNTc2MjQyS0

Don't get me started on the R model! ::005::
So, it's a Multistrada (only likely less reliable) that's actually dirt-worthy... Great fun until it breaks in the middle of nowhere...

I'll stick with the Tenere, thanks.

Signed,
One Happy Commuter

Those boxes look rock solid
My boxes?

If yes, then YES, they are rock solid. I built them myself all out of 0.125" 5052 aluminum with SS hinges and a nice simple but SOLID lock mechanism. The mounts are all hand fabbed by me are very secure and solid. I would put them up against about any professional built boxes including Vern's World beaters and Jesse's on strength. Not as pretty as the pro guys stuff, but I am pretty happy with them. They are pretty good size, 47L on the right and 41L on the left but because I built them myself I was able to really custom fit them and they are only 32" wide....pretty compact for lane splitting and narrow trails. They barely stick out past my knees and are narrower that the bars. Did I mention I LOVE owning tools? ::013::

I haven't replied to any of Pete's "commuter" trolls in the year-and-a-half he's been here - last night I just couldn't resist.

Someone please post the video of the Italian rider on his superten stunting and riding madly the streets, stairs, alleys and hills of his city. It's hilarious. ::025::

After reading all 6 pages of this topic.....

I've said before(some where on here) that after looking at all the other bikes out there I do love my S10. Is it a dirt bike? No. Is it a street bike? No. Is it a sport bike? No. In my opinion it's all of theese in one. And the first time you dump it you will know just how big and heavy it is(I think it took an hour to pick up mine the first time, at least it felt that way). I came from a KLR and that feels like a 250 now. I got mine because it's a Yamaha, plane and simple. The reliability, dealer network and as mentiond before 10K less than a GS.

And I must say every time I'm on this site I do learn something. I now know what a TEX is, and will now refer to them as "Exploders".
And yes I too had to put a Yamaha sticker on my bike.
And who locks there helmet??? I have no prob. hanging my $400 skid lid on my mirror. Think about it, who whould want that sweaty smelly thing? Ewwwwww. One look at a dirt, dust, mud covered bike should shout stay away from that.

Here's the same guy on dirt:

Yamaha XTZ1200R Super Ténéré e Francesco Catanese al Pharaons Rally 2011

He rides the ST like a 250cc dirt bike - incredible. Trying to pick out all the changes from stock on his bike. Knobbies, seat, exhaust, vented side panels, fork protectors, skid plate, no turn signals, headlight protector, aux gas tank on the right side (I think), a bunch of stuff on the console, ... it's a long list. How about suspension changes? I couldn't tell. Same with risers and handlebars. Couldn't get a good view.
