I am just trying to see how much it cost for the 6000 miles/10,000km service check for any current yamaha's owners. If you have taken it to your local dealership for its check up.
Took mine for a 10000km service recently - Cost = ZAR 2200 ( That translates to about $325) - That is without changing the spark plugs.
Service manager informed me that the next service @ 20000km will be approximately ZAR 1000 ($147) more.

Hope this will give you an indication

Wow you guys must love giving your dealers. Half of the techs that are going to work on your bike is going to be looking at the manual on how to take apart the bike just so they can get to the valves. My dealer will see the bike once and that is for the first service for warranty which you don't need to do either with them. I know he will clock me at least $180 US. If you take it to the dealer you might as well just bend over and take it up the ass coz you will feel raped. They will have to look to the manual to see what has to be checked and then figure out how and where it is on the bike. I have found the best way to learn your bike is do all your service yourself. If it is warranty work then yes bring it to the dealer but you better check all the bolts coz guarantee you will find some bolts not tightened. You do the work yourself that way when you are on a long trip you will know what to do or know what needs to be done. I had a Vee and the only time the dealer saw the bike was warranty work. I did all the oil changes and valve checks my self. Once you do it once it is real easy to work on. Just read your service manual and it is real easy.

No Joke ! Unless you have NO tools at all.... grab a filter and change your stuff.... Make sure to change that rear Diff... I 'washed' my FJR out with Mobil 1 every 500 for about 2000 miles.... That rear end is nasty.... I run full synthetic is all my bikes... In Metric bikes I use normally the M110 Mobil 1 filter..

Tabasco, you just struck a neuron in my brain....if they can make synthetic oil, why don't they make synthetic gasoline and cut our ties with the middle east ??? Oh wait that is just silly...we'll have a better chance of plugging our ponytails into our beasts like in Avatar ;D

OK back to topic...

how does one prove that the service has actually been done if you do it yourself?

Documentation, write the service down in the back of your owners manual and keep any receipts for oil, filters etc.

Anybody stateside had their dealer look up part numbers for the oil filter, air filter, drain plug washers, etc?
I wonder how soon these neccesities will be available?
I know I'll need to do the 600 mile service by the end of the first day of ownership! :))

Sefricans believed to be too stupid too look after their own bikes? ::)

I asked somebody at Yamaha South Africa about servicing the S10 myself and got the following response:

Hi

I can’t speak for what happens overseas, but our warranty system in South Africa is your bike has to be serviced at an approved Yamaha dealer.

If you service the bike yourself your warranty will fall away and we will not be able to assist you with if a problem does occure

And if any modifications are done on the motorcycle that are not Yamaha approved it will also affect your warranty.

Wow, that ^ kinda stinks. I can’t imagine having to pay someone just to change oil, torque bolts, etc … especially when I have a perfectly functional sixteen year old son in auto-tech to dump all that dirty work on.

+1 and particularly based on some of the work I have seen out of some dealers over the years!!! I've always wanted to know who torqued that critical bolt on the brake caliper, etc when I am out riding.

and worst of all is that we've compared costs at various dealers in SA and the most expensive was 3 times the cost of the cheapest... go figure!

Bundu,

Which one of the dealers were the cheapest. Mine need to be serviced next week.

I am quite sure that we passed one another last week Thursday near WAFB. Recognised your bike by the decals you posted recently.

Ja jou Bliksem, dink ek het jou gesien.... Not sure about which dealer will rip you off least, but in Pta we only have Centurion now - and I still believe we should not just be screwed over - when you book, ask them for a rough quote - friend of mine took his 1200GS to Bavaria for 20 000km service and paid R1800 (whilst getting a loan bike for the day.... Ahemmmmm) ....
