What is the basic problem with pre-2014 Windscreen shape?

So I've got the Madstad windscreen adjuster with my stock windscreen, and I cannot find a position that eliminates that odd vibration on my helmet (Arai XD-4) at highway speeds (50 mph +).

Again, if I stand on the pegs at even 75 mph the air is smooth. Sure I get wind noise but I don't have that annoying vibration/buffeting that after an hour on the highway has me motion sick. I'm 5'10" and pretty average in leg to torso proportion. I'm ready to just remove the windscreen completely as I'd rather not be motion sick and have my chest blasted! (not really but sometimes I feel that way)

So what is it about the design of the windscreen that just seems to not be designed correctly?

I want to buy an aftermarket screen, but my concern is that some of the aftermarket screens will completely block air flow to me. I want one that provides the benefits of having a screen but not the buffeting…

I think part of it is the distance between the seating position and the screen. The FJR screen is much closer to the rider, as well as leaning back more, so I don't recall this being much of an issue on that bike. So part of what I did (and I tried the Madstad as well, eventually wound up selling it) was move to a CalSci shorty screen for summer, and I added spacers to the bottom two screws to try to get more angle without adding height or increasing distance. In addition, I have noticed that helmet design plays a big part in buffeting, as my Shoei GT-Air is much smoother than the Bilt Explorer I have.

I had the same issue with the stock wind screen. I added the PUIG clip-on windscreen visor ($115) from Revzilla and it made a huge difference for me.

I don't know if you have the side deflectors or not, but they make a big difference. I have the Madstrad bracket and in the winter I run a VStream ws and in the Summer I use the stock ws. I was miserable with both, until I got the side panels.

Side wind deflectors were a great addition, but the best was the VStream shield. Like AVGeek, I added 1/4" of spacer under the bottom screws to add angle. The set-up works...almost too good in regards to wind management and protection.

I run madstadd with stock screen and side deflectors and no matter what angle I try it is hellishly noisey to the point of torture.

OP I feel your pain - I bought the madstad and stock screen combo is hellish. Doesn't matter which helmet I have on cheap, or expensive, I get a nasty vibe.

OEM Yamaha tall screen on the madstad is ok though

I have a WASP bracket with a CalSci medium shield and the Yamaha side wind deflectors. I would describe the wind management with this combination as excellent with no buffeting.
I'm 6' 1" with 32" inseam.

Can't believe you can't find a sweet spot. I keep my OEM screen as vertical as possible and low pstn. for normal riding, and med. to high for higher speeds (always vertical) , and with my Airoh MX helmet i have zero issues.

I loved the oem stock windscreen on my 2012 Tenere. I kept it in the low position added the wind wings and put over 64,800 miles on the bike.
Sorry it doesn't work for you.

I'm with Brick. I have the stock screen in the lowest position, the side deflectors, and the same XD 4 helmet as you, and I am very pleased with the wind management.

I am 5'6" with the stock wind screen in the high position, it could work better. Only if it is really windy and gusty do I feel a blast of wind in my face coming around the wind shield. I little wider shield would prevent that. But I am very pleased. I was very surprised at how well it works for me. Bought the bike new in April and have over 3k miles with two 950 mile trips on it.
