I never thought this part of my video would be worth anything, but turns out there may be a slight need. LOL. Sunday morning getting ready to come home from Queen Wilhelmina, I am patiently waiting on my sweet wife to get all her junk together so we can go down the mountain. I have about 5 minutes of this, but trimmed it down to 1 minute.

I have over 11,000 miles, ride like an old man, never go to red line, and stock.

Much of the noise you hear at idle would be the clutch. Pull in the clutch and the engine gets pretty quiet. The other noises I associate to being a big bore Twin! I also must have a different bike than many of you. Mine is SMOOTH AS SILK in 4th, 5th, and 6th gear above 4k. If i cruise in 3rd gear around 4-5k i do get some vibes and the engine makes a knocking sound but I think its just a characteristic of the motorcycle. ::022::

It's definitely got its own sound. Like a lot of nuts and bolts getting shaken in a coffee can. But I think it is just the characteristic of the motor. I have 5500 miles on it and the sound has never changed.
Well said and it is tough for me to accept the noise but I do. I am thinking there is a little clutch noise while it idles.

I've had it since January, now for 2 months. Noticed the ticking since new and assumed it was due to the original oil type (too thin). Changed the oil after first 600 miles, but the tick is still there. It sounds to me like a valve noise.
Please advise if you know a solution about this noise... or shall we just enjoy it.

Spasm…not sure about the whining, but I’ve got that incessant ticking going on, too. In fact, we’ve got two Ticking Tampa Teneres here that my dealer is trying to run down a cause on. It’s not metal heating and cooling. It’s in the top end somewhere. Prior to my dealer getting their hands on mine on the 16th of this month, they took the other Ticking Tenere Topend down and couldn’t isolate the source so, as of late last week, I understood they were going to get with Yamaha on it. In the meantime, there doesn’t seem to be any performance related affect so I’m carrying on as usual. But they’re on notice, so if it blows up or something, I’m covered…I hope.

Anyway, I don't have any answers, but you’re not alone on that one.

Maybe electric fuel pump?

Ticking = injectors

Mine sounds like two big thumpers stuck together with various noises chucked in and can of bolts in the bottom shaking around.

Guys, I don't get the ticking at idle. It comes at slow speeds (maybe just cant hear it at high speed). At first I thought it was my key chain slapping back & forth. Then I pulled over to see if there was a wire or something loos in the front end but found nothing. I took a long screwdriver and placed the tip on the cylinder head....nothing but smooth bearing noise. My conclusion was it's either exhaust noise or the injectors that only get loud at a certain RPM. Gotta get my first service done and see if there's any news of this at the dealer. I rode the hell out of that bike yesterday so she may have been gasping for air :) LOL!

I always wear ear plugs, usually put them in before starting the motor. Funny? I don't hear any ticking. Of course my previous bike was a V-Strom 650, very disturbing to hear that without ear plugs.

If you want to do an injector noise contest, I have a 24-valve Cummins in my Dodge truck. The VP-44 fuel injection unit is louder than the exhaust. I've removed the interior twice to add sound dampening insulation. It's not bad inside now, with the windows rolled up.

and i would also be happy if i knew other bikes we're making these weird and lovely noises ::025:: ::022:: ::008::
If you're describing them as lovely and not scary I say ::021::

Each engine has a character all its own. I loved the off-beat chug of the V4 in my VFR, but I do enjoy the baritone growl of this twin as it winds up (sometimes I wish for a higher redline as I'd like it to keep going) but that's the song of torque and I like the tune it plays. Can't wait to get my ECU Unleashed...

Mine sounds as if was going to blow since new. Ever listen to a Ducati 900ss with a dry clutch?
Mine too. If it bothers me I just remember what the KTM LC8 990 Adventure sounds like. I also wear earmold ear plugs. With the wind behind me, I could be sitting in a Roller it's so quiet. ::008::
