ok, my bikes had all the neccesary oil changes, and filter, 7200 miles. tonight i changed my map on the pcv, and just sat in the garage letting her warm up, i noticed alot of weird noises coming from the motor, mostly ticking quite bad if you actually sit and listen, and heavy deep wining noise,
ok before you all say it, i know its an engine and they make noise, i just wanted to compare with your bikes, per milage too.
i will admit i do ride fairly hard and always up through gears near the red line, i rarely let it hit the limiter as this aint good practise i know. but then again thats what its there for.
i would like to think that this engine is bullet proof as most yamaha engines usually are. and i would also be happy if i knew other bikes we're making these weird and lovely noises ::025:: ::022:: ::008::

Whining = normal gear mesh noise.

Ticking = if synchronous then source it down more. It could be valves, highly unlikely, or fuel injectors, highly likely AND normal. If asynchronous then it is most likely normal sounds of alloy metals as they heat/cool, etc.

In the end....

As for the rev limiter, you aren't gonna hurt the motor bouncing in to it periodically. Now, if you pin it and leave it there, well, the motor will probably be fine but then we'd be looking at taking a baseball bat to you. ::26:: ::26:: ::26::

Every one I have heard have alot of mechcanical noises. More than most engines, but seems to be normal for the beast.

had my Supa10 out yesterday as it was FREEKIN' 59 degrees here..!

Ran the doo out of it for a tick over 100 miles...acted like it did when I put it in for it's winter slumber.

Prolly liked the Techron I threw in it back in middle December...ran hard and like the champ it is.

its not a v-strom engine
although ive never owned a parallel twin ::008:: spose im really trying to find out, as this is a new engine from yamaha, ide expect it to be bullet proof, but none of us really know yet. ok nick sanders done 50,000 miles on his and when they stripped it, they reckon it looked hardly used at all. but then i doubt he was blasting around like i do, working that motor hard as fook ::025::
i used to cane the shit out of my xjr1300 and done 40,000 on her. she still sounded perfect the day i sold her

That and the clunky shift (on mine anyway) made the darn thing sound like it was ready to blow. I had a 77XS750D that had a knock down low, like in the clutch, but the bike never failed me. My 06 gl1800 ticks - injectors and whines - huge alternator, but runs smooth like a giant electric motor.

::026:: It took me a long time to get over it. After awhile you'll know the difference. I am still getting to know my XTZ12 at 1900 miles, should be well aquainted (sp?) by 2000 miles ::022::

Spasm…not sure about the whining, but I’ve got that incessant ticking going on, too. In fact, we’ve got two Ticking Tampa Teneres here that my dealer is trying to run down a cause on. It’s not metal heating and cooling. It’s in the top end somewhere. Prior to my dealer getting their hands on mine on the 16th of this month, they took the other Ticking Tenere Topend down and couldn’t isolate the source so, as of late last week, I understood they were going to get with Yamaha on it. In the meantime, there doesn’t seem to be any performance related affect so I’m carrying on as usual. But they’re on notice, so if it blows up or something, I’m covered…I hope.

Anyway, I don't have any answers, but you’re not alone on that one.

Bill, put me down in the ticking category. I listened to Mikes bike as well, he has the same tick. I just think that is the way these parallel twins sound. I have no performance issues, and quite frankly, I am not worried. I had the tick from when it was new. I was a little concerned back then but no longer.

It's definitely got its own sound. Like a lot of nuts and bolts getting shaken in a coffee can. But I think it is just the characteristic of the motor. I have 5500 miles on it and the sound has never changed.

It's a dry sump motor guys.

Go and listen to an old dry sump UJM from years back, you would swear that someone forgot to put oil in the things (well they did sort of).

So there is no oil to damp down all the noise bouncing around in the motor, so all the ticks and whines just bounce around merrily until they get out.

Get a loud exhaust, that will help. :D

Does the ticking go away when warmed up?

I have also had the same tick since new. I think if it just all of a sudden stopped ticking I would have a big problem....... :(.............. :'(
