I really like my 2012 ST. I would love it if it weighed 50lbs less. Any thoughts on how to lose some weight?

Did you ever consider joining the "Weight watchers" program?!
Do you do any diet at the moment?
Another thing to consider which makes a big difference is if you don't have regular bowel movements, if not, that's a good start, stuck crap is just waste, literally what do we need that shit for?!?
I don't take any elixir, drugs or things that nature, but I constantly check my belly, if I feel I am getting extra pounds, I skip eating for a day, if I don't go, I don't eat, it keeps my weight leveled.

there is not much you can do about ST weight without getting ridiculous. what purpose are you using it for that you want to reduce the weight by 50 pounds? you could replace all steel with titanium.

Most folks add a bunch of weight to their bikes.

I think as someone said, in all seriousness, start with a lighter bike…

Or don't add accessories to your bike. Consider how much luggage, skid plates, and crash bars, lights, more comfortable seats, etc, weigh. Then add in all the stuff we carry in that luggage.

Also reducing weight on the bike is WAY expensive. When I road-raced motorcycles, it was pretty amazing how much it cost to reduce a few lbs of weight like going from cast aluminum wheels to Magnesium or Carbon Fiber…. A few thousand dollars to lose a handful of pounds.

And you have to consider what you use your bike for. If its exclusively paved or extremely smooth roads or trails/rough stuff. Remember there is always a trade-off, you sacrifice durability to save weight.

Seems to me that with the bike's already well calculated and executed CG, the only place you'd notice a 50# loss would be in picking it up. If you're doing that fairly often, take others' excellent advice and shop for a lighter one because nickel and diming pounds on an elephant just isn't practical.

Another note, I've never really considered weight loss on a bike as critical unless it exceeded the weight value of a full tank of gas... The one constant variable.

get a KLR. ::025::

just like the others said, consider your accessories carefully.

The only real saving is the stock muffler. It's hideously heavy, and up high. The stock battery could be swapped to a lithium ion jobbie, but why waste a good battery.
I swapped mine out, and then promptly added weight by installing: crash bars, skid plate, racks/cases, aux lighting, sargent seat, a whole lot of extra wiring, blah blah blah...

On a positive note, I went on a diet and lost 30 lbs...

I know where I could easily lose 50 lbs off my tenere... All I have to do is look at my belly.

When I was into cafe bikes I always loved when some big dude ( like me) would talk about shaving a pound or two off their bike... I can take a pound or two off my bike by skipping breakfast!

Fifty pounds can be ...a few ounces... a few ounces... a few ounces.
Make a list of everything that has been added to your Tenere. Consider whether you need these items.
... do you need to carry tools or all of the tools? My tools are way too heavy.
... do you need an additional tool box? I have one and looking to remove it.
... do you need/use the OEM tools? I am removing mine tomorrow.
... do you need to carry tire repair items? I can carry less.
... do you need a skid plate? Have one but haven't installed it.
... do you need additional lighting? Have them but have not installed them.
... do you need an aftermarket tail plate? I have one and like it.
... does an aftermarket exhaust reduce weight? How much? Up to minus 6 pounds for $300.
... how much does your riding gear weigh? Can you afford to wear lighter riding gear? Riding boots can vary by a pound+. I need all new riding gear.
... how much weight do you add while traveling. Do you need all of it? I need to pack less.
... do you need to carry an additional gallon of gasoline? No but it sure feels good to have extra gasoline.
... do you need two bottles of water? Definitely if you are off-road.
... do you carry canned foods? Heavy! Consider dehydrated.
... do you need a computer / electronic device(s), accessories, etc? Not really but...
... how much does your weapon and ammo weigh?

*** and my favorite... can you afford to lose 40 pounds (I can, easily). This will help while riding and in general health.

Love your last bullet - "how much does your weapon and ammo weigh?"

Living in a semi-friendly gun state, this is actually a consideration for me!

I need to source a set of lightweight tools. I was surprised when I weighed my tool roll and it was almost 20 lbs. Need to cut that in half.

Where do you plan to go with all this extra weight?
If I am heading up into the mountains to explore for the afternoon I may carry a light one person tent or a bivy bag compressed down jacket something for fire some water and maybe some MRE just in case I have an emergency or sack out for the night.
The rest of the stuff is at base camp that I carried with me from home on paved road.

I try to travel light ...

Fully loaded two-up to Mexico.

Fully loaded two-up to Alaska ...

Even so, I could ditch some more weight having read the thread - OEM tools & Shorai battery for a start. And I'm 20lbs heavier than I was last year, so that has to go!

Then there's this ...

LOL!

I love TC's list.

No guns and ammo for me thanks.
Fuel, yes I have used my roto pax on several occasions.

The biggest problem with this post is that it addresses the wrong bike. If indeed you want a mid size adv bike, a v-strom 650 would be perfect.
Having said that, the tenere is no light, but hides it's bulk well on the stand, and even better once under way.

It weighs what it weighs, and works well with that weight.
Yes my DR725 weighs a lot less but it feels like a smaller bike going down the road.
It's good for the technical stuff, but for longer journeys, it will beat the crap out of me, and I will miss my:
-comfy seat
-extra fuel capacity
-a proper motor with get up and go
-my shaft drive that I never have to maintain while on the road
-my adj. windshield
-my LED lights
-my fully lockable hard luggage, that people cannot f. with
-my abs pump that weighs 4 pounds extra
-my TC
::002::

I could go on.

Ask yourself what you want to do with your new bike (preferably prior to buying said bike) then go and do said things. ::)
