Water Pump Breather Hose - Oil Drops

I did the search, and not much came up. One fellow inmate here mentions he rebuilt something, but is not clear about what got rebuilt. Probably the water pump water / oil seals at least.

Anyway, I have a very slight weep of oil out of the water pump breather hose. I noticed it first time today, with one drop on the garage floor, and another hanging at the breather hose outlet. The hose itself had a light coating of grime on the exterior, lower one inch, of exposed hanging hose. So, I assume it has been weeping for awhile. How long, I dont know. Heck, I did not even know the hose was there before today :)

Any words of wisdom from the Best and Brightest?

Thanks in Advance.

A perspiration, a drop of oil from time to time is normal. Mine had an oil dampness since new, but it never went beyond that. In any case, check the engine breather hose (between the valve cover and the filter box), that it is not misplaced and prevents the normal breathing of the engine (if there is internal pressure, it seeks to come out through the seals)... .
Number 7 is the oil seal….
if the leak was water (even a little), you have to change the water seal as soon as possible (#8)

At this moment your good and OK.........

Think about the water pump shaft having two seals on either side and a drain in the middle. If you see oil, its the motor side "seal", if you see antifreeze its the radiator side. Ive seen both many times. The first one I messed with I ordered the re build kit... This is a total PITB. Yamaha must have special tools to install the seals the correct way, otherwise its virtually impossible... (or so I think). After this Ive just brought the whole new water pump and you bolt it on. The rebuild kit take 1-2-3-4 hours...... the new water pump takes about 5-10 minutes to install.

So if anyone ever finds that its turning into a real leak from either side just buy the whole pump and be done with that. WORTH IT

I see a large hose coming out the bottom of the air box. Is this the "engine breather hose" being referred to in the quote?

Had the same problem with my 2015 bike at about year old. I brought the water pump into the dealer and he replaced just the seals that didn't solve the problem the second time the shaft and seals problem solved but I do get a little wet but no drops of oil. If would do again I would just buy the whole thing.

No, that breather tube recycles air/oil/mist from the valve cover to the air box. The water pump hose exits from the bottom of the engine and lays on the OEM plastic cowl/skid plate. I‘ve owned five S10s and all have left a slight oil wetting of the cowl from the water pump hose but never enough to drip on the garage floor between oil changes. I clean the cowl completely every oil change.

Yes. that hose is the engine breather…it has 2 bends before it goes into the filter box to recycle oil vapors. If at any time someone took out the filter box, and when putting it in its place, "that hose" was strangled by carelessness (just a little)... it will generate a small internal pressure, which will try to come out through some oil seal (water pump, gear lever, transmission shaft output)….this is just “a control check”, to rule out a possible cause of oil seal leak…..but the “small” oil leak from the oil seal water pump "is normal" ...... if the leak was water, that leak "is not normal"

The only seal that leaks oil in the S10 (from new), is the water pump oil seal, so I would go so far as to say that it leaks because it works not to prevent oil leaks...the oil seal prevent that the water entering to the engine, if the seal water broke.
Is a normal seal, if it is placed, as indicated in the service manual, with the lip towards the inside of the pump….the oil flows from behind the seal….and on the side of the lip, there is nothing, or there could be water (if this seal is break), and it is what the lip would not let enter the engine

Had mine replaced in the last week of warranty and four years. Rebuilt the one on my Royal Star. As Jaxon says, replace the whole thing.

I had my water pump replaced under warranty a year ago. Same deal, oil dripping from tell tell hose.
The dealer first attempted to replace the seals with the repair kit and a week later it started leaking again.
So the entire pump was replaced.
Don't bother rebuilding or resealing, as said by other's just replace and your done.

Thanks, Gents. Got It: Drop of Oil, OK; Drop of Water, Bad. Check for Engine Breather Hose Kinks (None Found, good tip). If / When (2 Y.O Water Pump Failed, previous poster!), then replace entire pump assembly.

Got It, Thank You!

My 2015 always seemed to have a drop of coolant at the end of that tell tale hose, but never dripped on the floor. After I changed the coolant using Prestone 50/50 all vehicles universal coolant from Auto Zone, the drop disappeared and the hose has since remained dry. Maybe the Prestone stuff has better seal conditioner additives or something??

Great info in these posts on the water pump. Mine is leaking about an ounce a day of coolant from the breather hose. I was going to try a rebuild but based on the info here I just ordered the entire assembly. 146 dollars on revzilla.com. Thanks.

Today i noticed i have fine layer of oil on the inside of the skidplate and a few drops near the hose in yellow....i suppose some drops have been coming out for a while now.

It's from the water pump, right ?

Well, not the pump specifically, it's from the shaft seal through the engine case that drives the water pump. But yeah, it is a water pump assembly.

This is what i had under the bashplate...doesn't look like much, but i re-route thehose to the outside and'll keep an eye on it.

UPDATE : don't change the position of the hose...it'll touch the exhaust pipe and start a slow, smelly burn....:D

There is a nut on the bottom of your bash plate... which does not belong there...;)
Yeah, i know, it's one of those holding the bash plate... :)

Cleaned everything up....did about 140 km ( a bit under 100 miles ), no signs of oil....maybe it was a random leak, who knows...i'll be keeping an eye on it.

Also...don't put the breather hose where it is on the last photo, i did it just to clear it from the inside of the bash plate and it was getting burned by the exhaust...back in place now...those Yamaha engineers know their stuff... :p
