Water entering windshield crossbar and causing rust

I think I may have a unique problem since I live in humid Florida close to the beach. After washing my S10 today I took it for a ride and noticed some brown drops on my gas tank. I looked at the crossbar and there was rusty brown water seeping out of one end and the wind was blowing the drops onto the front of the bike. When I got home I wiped down the bike and cleaned as much rust out of the crossbar as possible. I'm guessing the inside of the crossbar isn't coated with anything or painted and is getting rusty in this Florida environment. I'd like to plug off both ends of the crossbar to keep the water out and avoid the mess I had to clean up today after my ride. Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone know how I could seal off both ends of the crossbar? Thanks.

No surprise on the rust. It is almost impossible to get paint down a tube. Sierra makes a good point about getting it dry before plugging it. A heat gun on low setting or a blow dryer before plugging should do it. I use JB weld to plug it.

Thanks. Do you recall which JB Weld product you used to plug the ends of the crossbar?

I don't know if you're a gun guy, but if this was happening to me, I'd run a bore brush through the tubing to dislodge any rust that was already in there, and then I'd run a patch soaked in WD40 through the tube to remove the rust and to help prevent the rust from getting a foothold again. I'd do that before I sealed the ends of the tube.

Excellent suggestions! I think I have a gun cleaning kit somewhere in the house....just have to find it. Any suggestions on what to use to seal the ends of the tube?

I'd probably just use a rubber stopper on each end. Some of the better stocked hardware stores might have a selection of them, or else you could get them from a supply house like McMaster-Carr or Grainger.

Another great suggestion. I appreciate your help. Sure would have been nice if Yamaha had sealed both ends but I guess we can't have it all.

Same “problem” here in the Netherlands. I bet the UK guys know all about this too.
