Warranty work: How long is too long?

Nightmare scenario: Hard start and the exhaust cam slips time and bends 4 valves. It's been sitting in the shop since mid-April. Took them over a month to diagnose it and get YES approval then I was told piston kits would be in the Country June 6th. Tunnel, meet light? No. Now, waiting on head bolts because no one thought to put these important pieces in the original order.

I've been more than patient with these people but beginning to lose it. When does one start calling a regional rep? I would hate to piss these guys off since they'll have they're grubby little fingers in the heart of my engine and it's too late to take it to another shop since so much work has been performed. The service dept closest to me thinks the Tenere is a quad so they're no help. They got you by the short and curlies when you need warranty work.

Moral of the story, 1st Gen owners... get your CCT changed if you haven't already. Rant over.

I shouldn't have read this. Don't want to jinx myself as my CCT gets replaced day after tomorrow. It's been getting progressively noiser, now at 42K miles. Only one more cold start, 200 mile ride and I'm safe for awhile.

Any Gen 2 CCT reported failures yet?

Hope your bike made it to the shop! I'm sure my hardstart situation was to blame in the cam slipping. Multiple attempted starts and a weak tensioner is recipe for disaster.

And yes Ron, if there is a next time, I'll fix it myself. Screw those guys.

I tried to stay out of the warranty issues (difficult for me but it was best). 3 months and 23 days to get my CCT Failure destroyed 2012 engine rebuilt from the crank up. They ordered everything individually. The rod bolts were back ordered (no predicted date) so they ordered the Rod-Piston Kit with 2Day Air from Japan. Problem resolved. When they couldn't get all the parts for the head... the head was sent outside and was 100% rebuilt by a non-Yamaha builder. The builder would not use the Yamaha valves or guides.

Most of the delay comes from the parts they can't get.

Ouch! This makes my wait hurt less but now I'm wondering if more landmines await this rebuild. There was never any mention of valves or guide availability. My hope is the shop assembled the head prior to receiving the pistons so they don't discover something else needs attention like the valve seats being buggered up. The bike was ridden 5-6 miles after the engine restarted. I'll have to ask about that today. Great, one more thing to be neurotic about.

Thanks for sharing your pain. It appears you are enjoying the new one, maybe I should just trade it in on an ES and worry less!

Yes I made it. Cold start ups are all quiet now. My local dealers were all horror stories. I drove 200 miles and got exceptional service from Longview Yamaha Sportscenter. The owner is a Tenere enthusiast and has personally owned many Gen 1 & Gen 2 Tenere's so understands the CCT issue. I arrived before they opened in the morning to let the bike cool for them. They had it up on the lift almost immediately after service bay opened and were finished about 2 hrs later. 2 hrs sure beats 2, 3 or 4 weeks waiting without a bike and having to arrange rides to drop off and pickup. Well worth the 400 mile roundtrip ride, would do it again in a heartbeat if additional service ever needed. The staff there went above and beyond, best dealer experience I've had ever!

Update:

I'm working on the 3rd tank of gas with this break-in then I'll change the oil and begin to push it over 80mph for longer stints. Power feels smooth, excellent throttle response and super quiet startups. Stoked to have it back!

Miguel at TPS Garner told me cylinders were still in spec and everything from the con rods up was replaced. Forgot to ask if the valves needed adjustment but invoice shows no shims were ordered. Probably not a charge item?

I hope this good feeling lasts but for now a big thanks to Yamaha for making the bike whole again and the TPS techs for knowing how to do their job. Good purchase experience and good service experience just wish it wasn't 2hrs from my house.
