Re: Vololights Brake Kit

As I understood it, you invest $80 and may not even get anything for it? I like the concept, and will probably buy one when they can guarantee delivery of a product.

I like the concept and design. So they are not in production yet?

On kickstarter you are not charged unless the funding goal is met. If the funding goal is met you are charged whatever you pledged. Generally there are rewards for certain pledge levels. In the case of a product based kickstarter these rewards are typically the product. In essence these are pre-sales. However, your pledge is an investment and there are no guarantees you will get your rewards in the estimated time or at all. I backed a 3D Printer on Kickstarter back in November 2012. The printer was was suppose to ship in January but has seen several design revisions (and subsequent delays) and will be here in a few weeks. I'm in weekly contact with guys behind the printer kickstarter and understand why things are the way they are. Not all kickstarters are created equal but delays are very common.

Re: Vololights Brake Kit

This is ideal for scooters. With a scooter, the slowing is even more dramatic than a motorcycle when the throttle is chopped. I learned this when following a scooter and it seemed like he anchored it going into a turn, but I never saw a brake light. Stopped to warn him his brake light was out, only to find it was working just fine. The rider then told me he just let off on the throttle and the drag is enough to really slow the scooter down so he rarely uses the brakes while riding, just modulates with the throttle, in far more dramatic fashion than we experience on motorcycles.

I didn't read the whole thing, but from what I gather it sounds a lot like the Ciberlight of the 80's. That was a great product.

Re: Vololights Brake Kit

...seems to me that if the public isn't educated that these lights will do what they do when the rider is operating the bike in any of the axis modes it will go unnoticed.
I do like the idea that upon decel whether off the throttle or decel thru the gears downshifting that the lights go off.
That to me is the protection of the product.
I did notice that the LED's seemed very cheap and not very bright at all...in any of its modes.

I'll pass....

Re: Vololights Brake Kit

I don't think they need to be educated on the the different flash rates. The idea is just to get them to notice that something is happening in front of them the same as brake flashers. The advantage to this is it works without the brakes. If you actually have to emergency brake your going to hit your brakes so you will have this thing flashing plus your brake light....

The LEDs do not appear that bright. That may be the video or by design..

Got in on the Kickstarter for Vololights (http://vololights.com/) and got my unit the other day.....After installing, the unit appears DOA. The plate light comes on but that's it. No flashing lights on start up like its suppose to. Anybody else get these? Did they work? Just curious if this is an isolated problem. I have an email in to the company. I'll see what they say.

Vololights deceleration Indicator lights..interesting idea!

Just got my new copy of Motorcycle Consumer News. On the back is an article about a device that flashes your brake lights if you slow down without using the brake. Read an article about the guys from Kentucky that invented this device. Very interesting idea and if it keeps you from getting "wacked" from behind....it certainly will be worth the investment. I am going to buy the one that fits in the tail light.
It might be a great Christmas gift to yourself!!!

Seems like a good idea. I'd like to read the details. My one concern/thought is it making the person behind you think you are actually braking and they panic or the light coming on all the time you close the throttle… Does it use wheel speed or throttle position or ?

I'm sure they thought of this stuff already..

Interesting...I wonder how many false positives it gives on rough roads and how often it needs recalibration. I do computer hardware reviews part time for fun, if it were spring I'd probably can see about getting a sample for testing in return for an article write up.

Bumps cause speed differentiation about the vertical axis, while acceleration/deceleration happens about the longitudinal axis. Two different means of sampling.

I would be interested to see how it acts decelerating through a curve and the bike being leaned over past say 20%.

Re: Vololights deceleration Indicator lights..interesting idea!

I bought one of the early models and could not get it to work all the time so I abandoned the Volo and went to Gear Brake. Volo seems to have improved over time but maybe it was just me could not get it to function as advertised all the time. I had it on a switch and seems when I cut power the next time I used it had to recalibrate to make it work.

The motor vehicle codes are very clear what brake lights are and how they operate. I can't see how these would be legal in any State.

On the up-side, since inspectors only see the bike sitting, they probably would not notice.

I think it would be better to know what your ride is doing and when and not leave it up to some 'decelerometer'...
the cagers are already confused and it would not be nice to add to their confusion...
hence when you grab brake, you know your tail lights are doing their job...
supplementally I have an Admore Lightbar out back to notify the blind cagers in their minivans.....

and nope, I still haven't figured out how to add a video to a post.

Interesting... This product is just nerdy and obnoxious enough to be perfect for BMW's, yet it won't work for them. LOL

Oh yeah, Merry Christmas everyone! :)
