ES has a side panel on the right hand side covering the electronic gubbins ....it sits just below the seat..also the ES will not have an adjuster knob for the rear shock ::008::

Thanks! The rear shock was easy to see in the photos I was looking at. Who knows, I might be owning a 2014 non ES soon.

Thanks again.

A first glance easy way to tell a non-ES from an ES is the centre stand and passenger grab rails (these are ex-factory on ES only). If these are not on the bike, then it's likely to be a non-ES. However, if they are on the bike it doesn't necessarily mean that the bike is ES (they are available as accessories and therefore you can have a non-ES fitted with these).

Cool, did not know.
As a side note I'm thankful not to have the immobilizer.

Do both models come with heated hand grips? If not, where is the temp controller located on the ES models?

on the ES the temperature control and the on/off is accessed through the menu, so that will not help.... there is no separate temp controller

Only the ES comes with the factory heated grips installed. It is possible to buy the components necessary to install them on the non-ES for less money than the kit that Yamaha sells.
