Valve cover gaskets backordered

So it appears i'm in a bit of a pickle. I've got 41,000 km on my bike so checked the valve clearances yesterday. All are OK! Thought i'd wait to see if i needed shims and then order everything at once, thinking I'd get it in a day or two.

Seems the valve cover gaskets are backorderd at Yamaha Canada - for at least 3 weeks. It's riding season!!!

I've checked all the Toronto area dealers to see if there are any in stock; nadda. Even tried Calgary. Still nadda. Now going to try US.

Has anyone run into this? Any suggestions - other than buy 2?? :)

Thanks.

Let's just say it got damaged taking the valve cover off.

Not replacing the clutch cover gasket.
Not much fun getting the cover out of there and even less getting it back in! The manual states to rotate the cover clockwise then slide aft but there is no way in Hades you can avoid hitting something during that rotation. If the crossmember in the frame was removable, process would be much easier.

Great - I have that (replacing the cover) to look forward to. It sure was awkward. Making sure the gasket's seated properly could be tricky. Hopefully every time it gets easier.

Now to get that gasket! I've heard www.yamahapartshouse.com has them in stock but they were closed by the time I heard it.

Fortunately, you bought a Yamaha and should not have to worry for many moons to do this again. When you get the gasket and put the cover back on, stick your finger into the sparkplug holes to line up the middle part of rubber gasket as it will (more than likely) get misplaced during the rotation. Before tightening the cover, make sure the rubber is seated correctly or oil will leak. I had trouble with the right side half-moon sections over the cam gears. Boom! You just saved yourself $500.00. And to save you a step next time, you don't have to remove the clutch cover. Remove the access cover on the clutch cover and use that hole to turn the engine over. You can visualize the lettering on the gear quite easily. Just sayin', YMMV.

Thanks for the tips. Will keep in mind for next time.

Agree - can't argue with Yamaha quality.
