So, my 2012 California model with 15,000 miles has been in the shop for 3 weeks now. I want to begin by saying that the head technician at my local Yamaha shop is honest and knows his job very well. I dropped the bike off because it had an intermittent fueling issue. It seems that fuel level, ambient air temp, and how long the bike has been running are not factors. My ECU has not been flashed, nor has any mod been made to the engine or breathing system. After this happened the first time, I took it to my dealer and the tech was unable to find anything wrong.

After turning the key on, I thumb the starter and the bike doesn't start. I crack the throttle open a little, and the engine starts, but won't idle. I begin to ride, and after about a minute, the idle speed goes up from zero to about 2300, where it stays for the next 5 minutes. After riding 5 minutes, everything returns to normal. The last time it did this, I didn't start it. Instead, after work I loaded it on a trailer and took it to Yamaha. This time, the tech saw an error code, and I left the bike. I had also written a one-page detailed report of the instances I had experienced the problem and the surrounding circumstances.

My dealer talked to the regional Yamaha gurus, and then forwarded the problem on to National. I don't know if it made it all the way to Japan. Yamaha sent the dealer a laundry list of things to check. At the bottom of the list was to replace the wiring harness. Well, the wiring harness is in, and the bike was still showing an error code. When I talked to him Friday afternoon, my mechanic was waiting for a new ECU to arrive.

I'm wondering, has anyone else experienced a problem like this? What was the solution? I'm just glad this is all still under warranty!

It may help to know what the error code was.
Any indications of whether it is rich or lean?

I don't know what the code was. He did tell me that after he replaced the wiring harness, it was still showing a code.
UPDATE: I called the mechanic yesterday. They are still waiting for the ECU to arrive from Japan. He told me he was trying to find out some tracking information so he could figure out where in the world (literally) it is.

So ok...

Have you dropped the bike? Any time on it's side?

Everything you describe screams a charcoal canister with fuel in it. That's specific to CA models, and only likely if the bike was on it's side, but it's really easy to disconnect and find out if it changes the issues you're having.

I don't know what the problem is but if I was taking shots in the dark, there are about fifteen things I'd replace before the ECU and wiring harness.
