I've shown photos and video of this road several times. It's one of my favorites not too far from home. Well today it had a nice coat of mud on top. Not deep mud, but the mud that can get you sliding around pretty good. It's the slippery stuff that is amusing on flat and level surfaces, even heading uphill on the switchbacks was pretty fun. But your attention gets very focused going down the back side of the mountain on this steep road with considerable drops.
I did not set out to do an ABS test today, but it turned into one. The ABS was kicking in strong at the 1:52 mark of this video. It was the first time ABS even crossed my mind on this ride. I'll admit when it first happened I was wishing I had that off switch. But, the ABS worked. Bike stayed in control and never gave me the feeling it was going to let loose. That's good, because if it had let loose there I don't want to think about what would have happened. The road at this point is steeper than it appears on the video.
ABS Test
Yes, I know this is a very slow speed video. Like I said, the road is steeper than it looks, and keeping that 600+lb bike pointed downhill on muddy switchbacks was enough to keep my hands full. I'm pleased I did not need to take any sleeping Tenere photos. Being alone and picking it up in slippery mud would have sucked.
