RIDE, a respected UK magazine has just published its RIDER SURVEY of the best UK bikes. This is based on real owner ratings scoring out of 100 on more than just the usual performance markers, including such categories as value for money, reliability, running costs, dealer satisfaction and more. Despite the conspiracy of the motorcycling press here who have sold their souls to BMW and ignore the Super Ténére which is almost never included in bike comparisons nor mentioned in general editorial, guess what? In the top 100 bikes, which even covers discontinued models but, since it is owner driven, does not include the latest 2014 bikes, our Yamaha came SECOND, just 0.17% behind the Triumph Explorer. The BMW GS came 11th and that was the Adventure model. The standard GS could only manage 17th. Most surprising, the Super Ténére came 4th on braking, beating every sports bike but the 1098 Ducati. The only specific criticism of the Yamaha was that the spokes corroded too easily. Amen to that though ‘tis but a small thing.
What this shows is that, outside of the blinkered motorcycling press whose opinions are grounded on the generosity of the latest manufacturer junket and sponsored trips to exotic track days and who never have to pay the price of actually owning and maintaining the bike, real motorcyclists know a good thing when they ride it and, more importantly, own it.
Although we all know the truth, its nice when a magazine makes it official, don’t you think?
