I have finally got bored of my Super Tenere, it refuses to do anything other than function perfectly, nothing has fallen off and I doubt anything ever will.

A cracking deal on a KTM1190 has swayed me to the Orange side where excitement (Mechanical Failures and huge servicing costs) await.

The S10 is probably the best all round bike I have ever owned, never have I kept a bike this long unless I was too skint to change it. With the Mrs now riding her own bike something lighter was always looking attractive, and I have to admit the exotic performance of the KTM was a lure, the test ride confirmed it was very fast, very light and surprisingly good at cruising at a sensible speed, it also had more bottom end that I expected and was superbly smooth.

It will be a very sad day when I take my bike in, buying the new one was not hard, but I spent a long time considering how sad I will be to see the Yamaha going into the dealer, in a way I was hoping for a crap px offer as it may have meant I did nothing, or contemplated owning both bikes, but alas the px value makes it worth more to the dealer than to me.

Thanks to everyone here who helped with info and advice over the last 4 years and happy riding.

I may have a full set of SW-Motech Trax luggage up for sale in the near future along with a top spec Wilburs shock with 3 way damping adjustment and remote pre-load adjuster, will post these in the relevant section once I have got them removed.

What??!! Not you Rob, I thought you'd be here when everything turns to dust!!! Well enjoy your new ride, and post a few pics, not too many mind, 'cos you never know. It must be swap season as, if I honest I'm looking at other options too, but cruise is one of the criteria.....

Good luck with your new bike, I'm sure that it will serve you well!

I have been riding KTM's for the past eight years and I have had absolutely zero problems with them. The maintenance and associated costs on the twins isn't as bad as people make it out to be.....IMHO.

I understand about getting bored with a bike, no matter how good it is. I might even get something else along the way.
Maybe another season or two. There are a few bikes I'd like to own before I have to give them up!
O:)

The dealer here sells KTM and Yamaha. KTM 1190 is an awesome looking ride. But, the only "other" ride that has my interest is the Honda AT. I'll wait a couple of years before I think about trading.

Hope you enjoy many trouble free miles on your new ride!

As a current KTM owner who's been burned by orange before, I can understand both sides of the owner experience. And why we keep going back for more.

Congratulations and hope you stick around anyway.

You will really enjoy the KTM, I had the 1190 Standard model with the electronic suspension. With the engine and suspension set to the sport mode the bike was a bona fide SuperBike. Hang On!

Thanks guys.

The swap is no reflection on how good the Yamaha is, or is not.

I have been feeling really anxious about the change, not because I am worried about getting the KTM, but because of all the good times and memories the big old Yamaha has given me and the Mrs, I cannot believe I have traded it in, and really by accident.

Due to seeing ad for 2015 KTMs at huge reduction I thought I would try one, not like it, and all would go back to normal, or would like it and be offered an offensive px price, but I did like it, the px was very good and it saves me the upcoming 24k service and a new rear tyre for an upcoming trip.

Keep thinking about trying to keep it, but really cannot afford to turn down the px value, or justify two large Adv bikes in the garage.

In a way I sort of wish I had never gone for the test ride, the Yamaha was very much MY bike, setup exactly as I liked it, I know it inside out and everything suits me perfectly, but more than anything all of my best biking memories are with that bike, we had toured on the ZZR 1400 (ZX14R) a couple of times and I had a brief flirt with a BMW GS, but the Yamaha delivered our best trips, both when two-up and then when Mrs R got her own bike.

We had named it the "Super Donkey" due to the way it just lugged us around in a stubborn and un-stoppable manner.

I will report back on the Orange thingy, but I cannot see it lasting as long (in either sense of the word) as the S10, I know it is fast, I hope it will be comfy (Ordered "Ergo" comfort seat) and I am sure it will put a grin on my face when zooming over Alpine passes, not so sure it will tick the box as well when the weather turns to crap or it is late in the day and I still have a couple of hours boring ride to get through....

....and it has a bloody chain, I said I would never have one of them again, I also said the S10 (along with several other bikes) was going to be a "keeper" ::) I think this is keeper number four.

I am worried I may :'( like a girl when I ride the Yamaha into the dealers, then again what a great bike, despite its often reported "lack of character" it is the first bike I have got really attached to in 30 years of biking, I have missed some other bikes on occasions and regretted selling a few due to the values they have now ascended to, but nothing has come close to being so upsetting to say goodbye to at the time of departure.

When the gloss of the orange wears, you can be like ColoRider and come back. Who knows, we may be on the new and improved Gen3!
;)

btw - It ought to take a long time for the gloss of the 1190 to wear off. I've ridden a couple and it's a fantastic machine.

Congrats

Is the Orange machine coming from Didcot by chance? My brother picked up his new 1190 from there a few weeks back.

Sure is, could not resist the deal, spent last night trying to work out if I could afford to keep the S10 as well, but it is another bike to Tax / MOT / Service and even with minimal use stuff like batteries will wear out etc - and the PX is over 50% of the cost including accessories and although I might be able to find the funds I cannot justify it to keep the bike due to sentimental value.

Just move on and forget about any sentimental attachments. I own a number of bikes and find it a HUGE pain in the ass to have so many. I truely wish that I can have only one but its nearly impossible for me.

Don't feel bad Rasher.

I recently test rode an 1190R. I'm after a bike more capable off road. Tubeless tires, and a center stand as standard (are you listening Honda???)
The motor is a revelation. No waiting, no nothing, just bam, and you're off. Good pull down low, and primo suspension.
I will be changing bikes in about a year time. The 1190R is definitely on my Radar.

Enjoy, stick around and keep us updated of your new twin cylinder relationship

Thanks Greg,

Still looking at the S10 with tearful eyes, started taking bits off last night to fit on new bike and was amazed at how clean it is for the age, plus how handsome it looks, better than the KTM IMO.

The sentimentality is the problem, had I been offered a crap PX I would have probably bought the KTM with a view to selling the S10 at my leisure, the PX price is not only good, but not really inflated as I already had £3k off the new bike. I think I could probably replace my S10 for the PX money quite easily if buying private so there is "nothing to lose" if I later wanted another S10 - put away PX vale which will not go down whilst the value of S10's of this era still depreciate.

The logic works, I am no worse off, I could buy another S10 in a couple of years - and possibly by then a Gen2 would be an option for the PX money in the bank.

So the problem is this bike has given me so much joy, asked for nothing in return (well tyres and petrol) and I have so many fond memories of it, not sure this makes it a good idea to keep it sat around, it may take a few miles off the new bike by using it, and that would help prop up KTM value, but really not enough.

Will I really regret not keeping the S10 when I am old and grey  Probably not, I miss most of my old bikes to some degree, but at the same time this love of so many bikes does show that moving on is good, so many different biking experiences.

Taking into account the S10 is unlikely to become hugely valuable, unlike my very rare factory built (not an importer re-spray job) Walter Wolf RG500 I sold for £2500 (Easily worth over £15,000 today) or the £5500 low mileage RC30 I turned down around 1990.

So I think it will be onwards and upwards with just the fantastic memories of the S10 and some wonderful pictures of it in all the laces it took us to, and as an added bonus someone else will get to enjoy this rather splendid and extremely well sorted piece of machinery which I am sure will bring them the same pleasure it brought me.

I'd love to have a second 'different' bike. Speed Triple, Rocket III, something fun! Triples just seem like the perfect engine on a bike. ::26::
